Franklin Park Zoo Field Trip
On Thursday, May 26th our class will be going on a field trip to Franklin Park Zoo! Please sign and return the permission slip that was sent home with your child on Friday if they are able to attend. It is important to note that there is no cost for families due to the generosity of Boyden's PAC. More details about our trip will be sent home in the upcoming weeks.

 Library Tomorrow
A friendly reminder that our class visits the library/media center on Mondays. Please have your child return their book so that they are able to select a new one. Please also return your child's clean quiet time towel as well. Thanks so much for all of your help! :)

Curriculum Update:

This Week's Sight Words: or, out

Reader's Workshop
Last week in Reader's Workshop we learned about what it means to be an avid reader! We discussed that avid readers are reading CONSTANTLY and in many different locations. After their introduction to this concept, the children were encouraged to pick their own "Read to Self" spot and think like an avid reader when doing so. It was wonderful to see the children in many new (and comfy!) self-selected reading spots around the classroom!

We also learned that avid readers feel what the characters in the books they read are feeling! The students practiced this skill by marking pages where the characters had strong feelings with a sticky note.

Fundations
In Fundations we continue to practice reading words with the digraphs sh, th, ch, wh, and ck. We are also building our oral reading flunecy by reading sentences of varying lengths and complexities. One way the students have been taught to avoid the dreaded "robot reading" is by "scooping" or chunking the sentences they read. Try writing the sentence: The rat is on the mat. Ask your child to show you how to scoop it!

The students above can be seen working hard to complete their literacy centers!

Math
In math last week we practiced identifying position words such as in front of, behind, inside, outside, above, and below

The students above demonstrate different positions using a book bin and Wanda our worm pointer!

We also practiced this skill using one of Boyden's new touchscreen panels! This technology really brought our lesson to life and made it incredibly engaging for all of the children!

Science
It was an excitng time for science as our butterfly kits arrived! Over the next several weeks we will observe and journal the changes we notice!

Social Studies
Last week in Social Studies we continued to discuss Earth Day! We learned about different ways to take care of the earth, and even practiced sorting recyclable items using the touchpad panel!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that in new in Room 202!
