A friendly reminder that our class visits the library/media center on Mondays. Please have your child return their book so that they are able to select a new one. Please also return your child's clean quiet time towel as well. Thanks so much for all of your help! :)

ABC Countdown to Summer!

Curriculum Update:

This Week's Sight Words: when, what

Reader's Workshop
Last week in Reader's Workshop we continued to explore what it means to be an avid nonfiction reader. A highlight of the week was creating book bins which organized our "just right" books by topic. Some of these topics included: community helpers, pets, wild animals, weather, and math, just to name a few! The students then formed book clubs where they read books that centered around their individual interests and discussed these books with peers in their club.

Fundations
In Fundations we continue to practice reading and writing sentences and using "scoops" to build fluency. In order to reinforce the three elements needed (capital letter, ending mark, finger spaces) I introduced 3 star sentences. Students who remember to include all three of the needed elements will receive 3 stars on their work. Students who remember 2 elements will received 2 stars, etc. Along with our sentence practice we also learned two new sight words: they and with! To help us remember the word they, the children learned this catchy song! Click here to listen!

Math
Last week in math we continued to explore 3D shapes/solid figures. One of our favorite activities was going on a solid hunt around the classroom and finding real life examples with the 3D shapes we have been learning about!

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop we continued to practice our opinion writing by generating posters, letters, and books to try and address real world problems. In addition to our Lucy Calkins curriculum, we also took to the time to incorporate our ABC countdown into Writer's Workshop by writing about our favorite exercise and what it means to be a good friend!

Science
Last week in science we completed our unit on butterfly life cycles as we let our last few butterflies go on Monday. This week we will begin learning about seeds and what they need to grow. This is a fun, hands on unit for the class as we will get the chance to plant many different kinds of seeds!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!
