Announcements:

Show and Tell Unit
On Thursday your child brought home a notice about our upcoming "Show and Tell" writing unit. In order to launch this unit successfully, the Kindergarten teachers are asking that each child bring in one special object to write about. It should be something that can stay at school for the week and is small enough to fit in a gallon size ziplock bag. Please have your child bring their object to school on Monday, October 16th (tomorrow) as we will be using them in class on Tuesday. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
A friendly reminder that Parent/Teacher Conferences begin next week. The conference scheduler is now closed, so if you have not made an appointment please contact me directly. Thank you! 😊

Quiet Time Towels
Quiet Time towels were sent home for washing on Friday. Please return your child's clean towel to school by this Friday, October 20th.

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters c and o. We also practiced reading the sight words "you" and "of". Our color of the week was orange!

As a fun Friday project the class enjoyed making their own octopus! This activity provided the children with great fine motor practice, and reinforced our Fundations letter, picture, and sound: o, octopus, /o/! We also learned real facts and information about the octopus (did you know they have 3 hearts?!?) through nonfiction, or "learn about the world books". This was a wonderful connection to the nonfiction genre that was introduced during Reader's Workshop last week!

Math
In math we completed the first unit in our new Bridges curriculum! Last week's lessons focused on patterns. The class learned that patterns are colors, pictures, words, or movements that repeat.

We had a great time using unifix cubes to practice our pattern making skills!

Reader's Workshop
Last week in Reader's Workshop the class was introduced to the genre of nonfiction, also known as "learn about the world" books! We learned that nonfiction books teach us facts and information about real life things, and are different from fictional stories that contain characters, a problem, and a solution.

The class had a great time getting their hands on some awesome nonfiction texts, and used the pictures to learn about fabulous topics such as butterflies, owls, trucks, and forests (just to name a few!). It is important to note that it is not expected that the children can read the words in these books yet. That will come later in the year!

Writer's Workshop
It was an exciting time in Writer's Workshop last week as we completed our illustrators unit! The children learned how to use a "big line" to organize their pictures and show objects that can be found in the sky, on the ground, and under the ground/water. We also learned that when our pictures include characters and a detailed setting we can tell stories about the work we create. Next week we will begin our Show and Tell unit. Please be sure your child brings a small item from home to write about!

Thank You 4th Graders!
A big "thank you" to some wonderful 4th grade friends from Mrs. Iuculano's class who created and presented a fantastic slideshow for us on Friday! The topic of their presentation was Boyden's rules and expectations. These reminders were incredibly helpful for our Kindergarten friends as they continue to acclimated to the expectations at Boyden School.

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K! 🍎📖🚌
