A Peek At Our Week!

Sunday, April 25, 2021 No comments

Happy rainy Sunday! A friendly reminder that classes will resume tomorrow, Monday, April 26th. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone back together again in Room 202 and hearing about the wonderful spring breaks that were had!

Important Dates:

April 27th:
Picture Day

Curriculum:

Earth Day!
Our class had an awesome time learning about and celebrating Earth Day before vacation! We learned that recycling, conserving electricity and water, and donating our old clothes and toys are just a few ways that we can reduce waste and keep our earth healthy and clean!

The students above are taking a closer look at the aftermath of an experiment that showed the impact of pollution on our water.

The class did a fantastic job writing about the ways we can help protect our earth and make it a better place to live!

Math
In math we began a unit on Geometry and explored two dimensional shapes. During our lessons we learned and discussed the names and attributes of circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, and hexagons. This week we will begin to explore three dimensional, or solid shapes!

A shape hunt was the perfect way to kick off our unit on two dimensional figures. We noticed that circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, and hexagons were all around us in our classroom!

We ended our week by making shape pizza's! The class really enjoyed this fun (and yummy) activity!

Fundations
In Fundations we continued to learn and about and read words with digraphs! We reviewed that the letters sh, th, ch, wh, and ck are all digraphs because, when joined together, they make one new sound. One way we practiced our digraph sounds was by playing a fun game called Scoot! During the game the children rotated through cards and had to write down the digraph for each picture shown before I yelled "scoot!". This was a great way to get the class moving and learning at the same time!

Reader's Workshop
It was an exciting time in Reader's Workshop as the students continued to work with their partners and book clubs to explore nonfiction texts! Before vacation we continued to familiarize ourselves with various nonfiction books and even compared the similarities and differences between books on the same topic. On Friday, Mrs. Miles introduced us to a new genre of text, poetry! We had a great time reading many new poems and exploring their rhythm and rhyme!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!

Curriculum:

Last Week's Sight Words: he, she, we
This Week's Sight Words: me, be

Reader's Workshop
Last week in Reader's Workshop we continued our exploration of nonfiction books. We learned to talk like an expert as we identified important vocabulary in various nonfiction books, and even enjoyed some nonfiction book playdates!

The student above are reading nonfiction texts aloud to their playdate partners! During our "playdates" the children taught their partners important vocabulary from their books, acted out their book, and even had their partner look for snap words!

Math
In math last week we completed a short unit on position words! The children enjoyed many fun songs, games, and interactive activities that helped them practice the meaning of the words on, above, below, beside, between, as well as left and right!

The students above are showing off  left and right bracelets that were used as a visual support as we enjoyed this fun video!

We also completed a fun cut and glue activity after reading the book Pete the Cat: Wheels on the Bus!

Fundations
It was an exciting time in Fundations last week as we began Unit 4 which focuses on digraphs! We learned that a digraph is when two letters "stick together" to make one new sound, and practiced reading words with the digraphs sh, th, ch, wh, and ck.

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop we continue to practice our opinion writing! The students have quickly become pros at identifying problems and including reasons why these problems should be resolved. Last week we began to explore "fix it" solutions or ways to solve the problems we have identified. While our focus up until now has been problems we've identified at school, at the end of last week we began exploring problems that impact the world such as liter, pollution, and cutting down trees. The children continue to work hard and are doing a fantastic job with this unit!

Art
Friday was a beautiful day to get outside for art! Thank you to Mrs. Marinelli for sharing some pictures from her outdoor lesson which had the children drawing chalk self portraits!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!

Please be on the lookout for  information about how this will impact our classroom. I will be sending home a notice at the beginning of the week.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Thank you so much to all of the parents who met with me for spring conferences last week. I really enjoyed chatting with each one of you! While there are no more formal conferences held this year, please never hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions or concerns about your child's progress in class. I am always more than happy to speak with you!

Curriculum Update:

Last Week's Sight Word: was

Writing
Last week we continued our unit on opinion writing. Over the past several week's your child has been sharing their opinions and persuading others by creating posters and books. During last week's lessons we learned how to write letters! We enjoy reading the books Click Clack Moo, Cows that Type and Can I Be Your Dog? to help us better understand how letters can be an effective way of sharing our opinions and convincing our audience!

Reader's Workshop
Last week in Reader's Workshop we continued to enjoy book playdates! We also began thinking about and interacting to nonfiction texts. This part of the unit has been a nice change of pace as the students really enjoy reading about real like topics and learning new facts and pieces of information.

The students above enjoy having a book playdate with a special furry friend!

Math
It was an exciting time in math last week as we began to explore our teen numbers using our base ten blocks! We learned that one rod or "train" is worth ten, and that every teen number has one group of ten and then "some more". We also used this fun chant to help strengthen our understanding of teen numbers using our new manipulatives!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that in new in Room 202!
