A Peek At Our Week!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed today's beautiful weather! It was another busy week in Room 115. Please enjoy a few updates below!

Important Dates:

March 31st:
Early Release Day
12:25pm Dismissal

Announcements:

Welcome Spring!
We had a great time celebrating the start of spring on Monday! To kick off the start of the new season, we read the story When Spring Comes by Kevin Henkes, and wrote about our favorite spring activities!

Rock Your Socks!
Last week got off to a great start as we recognized Down Syndrome Awareness Day on Tuesday. Thanks so much to all those who participated and rocked their fun/crazy socks!

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations we practiced reading the sight word see. The children also continued to read  both real and nonsense CVC words, and worked hard to identify which category given words fell into.  Next week we will begin learning about the diagraphs sh, th, ch, wh, and ck, and discuss that digraphs are two letters that make one new sound.

Math
In math we continue to learn about geometry concepts in our Bridges curriculum. Last week's lessons focused on 3D solid figures, and we spent a great deal of time discussing the characteristics and attributes of spheres and cylinders. On Friday we had a great time participating in a classroom scavernger hunt where the students found real life examples of these two solids and many more!

A quick warm up before the big hunt!

The children found SO many different examples of 3D solids in our classroom!

Reader's Workshop
It was a busy time in Reader's Workshop last week as we kicked our reading skills into high gear! Our most significant lesson focused on words that end in the letters -ck such as sock, pack, and truck. We also took the opportunity to look at words that end in two of the same letter such as grass, ball, and puff!

Writer's Workshop
The "how to" writing continued last week during Writer's Workshop, and the children began to add more detail to their pieces. During last week's lessons we learned to include tips and tricks for our audience to make our "how tos" easier to understand and follow. For example, when writing a "how to" about brushing your teeth, it would be important to remind your reader to brush ALL of their teeth, not just the front ones. 😉

For our fun Friday writing we embraced the start of spring with a directed drawing of a tulip. The students added their own backgrounds and details to make their pieces unique, and did a great job writing sentences to accompany their work!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K! 🍎
