Report Cards
Yesterday your child came home with their progress report for Term 1! It is important to review your child’s progress report, and to celebrate all that they have accomplished this term! When viewing your child’s progress report, it is important to remember that the skills shown on the report are what we expect our students to master by the end of kindergarten. Being that we are only halfway through the school year, it is completely appropriate for students that are doing well to earn scores of 1 or 2, as they are working towards mastering each standard by the end of the year. Please keep in mind that we have not yet covered some standards in our curriculum (as is the case with many of our science, social studies and math standards). As a result, your child was not assessed on their mastery of these skills in term one. After reviewing your child’s progress report, please sign and return their report card envelope to school. The progress report is yours to keep! I am SO proud of each child for working very hard this term, and look forward to supporting their continued success in our second term together!

Hip Hip Hooray for the 100th Day!
A friendly reminder that this Monday, February 6th is the 100th day of school! Please have your child bring in their bag of 100 items if they have not already done so. I am looking forward to having the class share their creative collections on Monday!

Groundhog Homework
I am SO proud of the children as they worked hard to complete their very first homework assignment! We had a great time discussing Groundhog Day on Thursday and learned many fun facts about our good friend Phil! (Did you know Groundhog day originated in Germany!?!)

Curriculum Update

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we discussed the question, "What do seeds become?' as we read the book Seeds by Ken Robbins. We learned that fruits and vegetables grow from seeds, and that some of these tasty treats even have one big, hard seed called a pit! We were excited to try our own experiment by placing a pit from an avocado into a glass of water. We hope in the next few weeks an avocado plant will begin to sprout!

Also last week we began practicing the new sight words of, you, and they and also learned all about the letter F!

Math
Subtraction has been our major focus in math and the children are doing a fantastic job developing their understanding of this sometimes tricky concept! This week we continued to practice solving subtraction number sentences that included the minus and equals signs. We also learned that you can cross off objects in a picture to show "taking away".

Last week we practiced our subtraction skills by playing Penguin Roll and Uncover! To play, the children had to roll a die and remove that number of counters from their board until all of their penguins were visible. We are looking forward to playing this game with a partner soon!

The class also had a blast as they found the numbers 1-100 around the classroom and colored them in on their 100 chart! This was an excellent activity for helping us get ready for the 100th day of school!

Reading Buddies!
On Friday, we continued to share stories with our Reading Buddies and had a great time traveling down to Mrs. Davis' second grade classroom! Reading Buddies is definitely a fantastic way to end a very busy week!

Thanks so much for stopping by to take a peek at our week! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. GO PATS!
