Instead of being out, the student standing on the sight word called won a prize! Click here to watch us play!

Math
Before the break our class revisited numbers to 20 in math! We practiced counting and identifying these numbers by playing fun games called Capture the Number and Double Top Draw. In the week ahead we will learn about, and practice solving addition and subtraction story problems.

We celebrated the start of spring break with some extra time outside on Friday afternoon! 🌞

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations we learned the sight words are and little. The class was also continued to practice reading words with the digraphs sh, ch, th, wh, and ck.

After reading the book Sheep in a Shop by Nancy Shaw, the class enjoyed making their own sheep and reading words with the -sh digraph!

Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop we continued to ask the essential question: "What can I learn when I look closely?" We enjoyed reading the books I Know the River Loves Me by Maya Christina Gonzalez, and Look-Alike Animals by Robin Bernard. These books provided us with practice identifying the topic and central idea of a text, as well as discussing the author's purpose for writing each selection.

Last week in Reader's Workshop we also learned about multiple meaning words (also known as homophones).

Math
In math we began Unit 7 last week. The first module of this unit had us revisiting the concept of measurement. Our learning focused on weight and we examined various types of scales. We also used balance scales to compare the weight of different objects.

The students above sort real life items into the categories "heavy" and "light".

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop the students were introduced to a new type of writing known as narrative writing! In this writing unit the children will tell about a real life event in a three page story that consists of a beginning, middle, and end. Last week we began to write a narrative story about when our chairs went missing on April Fools' Day! 😂

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K! 🍎📖🚌

Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop we began Module (unit) 7 last week. This unit is titled: Zoom In! and asks the essential question: "What can I learn when I look closely?" We enjoyed reading the stories Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena and Not a Box by Antoinette Portis. These books provided us with practice retelling a story, making connections, and identifying the story elements of character, setting, and events.

Math
In math the students continued to develop their understanding of number combinations as we spent the week learning the "friends of 10" or the numbers that, when added together, equal ten. Stay tuned for a picture of our classroom bulletin board which features a spring themed craft that showcases this new learning!

April Fools Day 2025

Tuesday, April 1, 2025 No comments

Room 115 was filled with fun as we celebrated April Fools' Day today! Please enjoy the pictures and video below. 😂

As the students entered the classroom this morning they were shocked to see that all of the chairs were missing! We read the book Chairs on Strike by Jennifer Jones and discussed where our chairs might be hiding.

Snack was picnic style since our chairs were nowhere to be found! As the class went out to recess the joke was finally revealed. Click here to see a video of their reactions! We will use this experience to kick off our next writing unit which will focus on narrative writing, and we will work to write a story about a time we were surprised!

I had no problem reading the morning message, but apparently the class couldn't see it! 😆

Happy April Fools' Day!
