Q and U Wedding
A friendly reminder that the wedding of Q and U will take place this Wednesday, December 21st. If possible, please have your child bring a wrapped/packaged item that begins with the letter Q and/or U (q-tips, quilt, quarter, unicorn, umbrella, etc.) for the wedding shower. Students are also welcome to dress up for the occasion if they would like to!

Quiet Time Towels
Quiet Time towels were sent home on Friday for washing. Please return your child's clean towel to school tomorrow (Monday). Thank you so much!

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters qu. and z. They also practiced reading the sight word "from". In the upcoming week we will review all of the sight words that have been taught so far this year, and prepare for the Q and U wedding!

Math
In math we continue to learn about the concept of adding, or putting two groups together. Last week the students were introduced to the + and = symbols, and learned that these are used to write addition number sentences, also known as equations.

We also continued to practice the concept of greater than and less than, and learned a new game to help practice this skill!

Another highlight of our week was getting to meet our favorite ST Math mascot, JiJi! It was so exciting to meet JiJi in person, and they even awarded us with a special certificate to celebrate the progress all of the students have made so far this year. Thank you JiJi!

Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop we continued to enjoy old storybook favorites last week. The students loved hearing our new class favorite, The Carrot Seed again, and did a great job sequencing the events of the story. At the end of the week we read Golidlocks and the Three Bears and then compared it to the book Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems. We used a venn diagram to show how these two stories are the same and how they are different.

The students above enjoy some old favorite story books!

Writer's Workshop
Last week in Writer's Workshop the class continued to work on their "All About" pattern books. As this unit comes to a close, each child's goal is to complete, or publish, at least one of their pieces making sure that they include lots of colors, details, labels, and even a cover! I'm excited to share pictures from our writer's celebration which will take place this week!

Friday Free Choice!
There's no better way to end a busy week then with Friday free choice with friends!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K!

Gifts for Kids
All donations for the Gift for Kids program are due this Monday, December 12th. Thank you so much for your incredibly generous donations. They are sure to make our sponsored child's holiday merry and bright!

Walpole High Film Festival
Last week I received a very exciting email from Mr. James Connolly, an advisor for the Walpole High School Film Festival. This year a film is being made about a high school student who travels back to Kindergarten to relearn how to follow the rules, and they are looking for a Kindergarten class (and teacher) to help them bring their project alive! I will be sending home a permission tomorrow for you to sign if you are comfortable with your child participating in this very special project. I will be sure to share more details as they become available. From what I understanding filming would not begin until January or February. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have and I will do my best to answer them!

Quiet Time Towels
Quiet Time towels were sent home on Friday for washing. Please return your child's clean towel to school tomorrow (Monday). Thank you!

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters x. and y. They also practiced reading the sight word "like". We have now learned all of the color words, and last week took the time to make a class book about our favorite colors (pictures to follow!).

After reading the book, What Does the X-Ray Say? the class enjoyed making their own x-ray art projects!

Math
In math the class was introduced to the concept of adding one, taking away one, which will prepare them for addition and subtraction in the upcoming weeks. We learned many new partner games to help practice this skill and look forward to continuing to play them during math work stations in the week ahead!

The students above enjoy playing a new game called Under the Bowl (or in our case, cup 😂). To play, the first student selects a number of cubes for their partner to count, then places them under the cup. The first student then either adds one more cube or takes one away, and their partner must guess the new number of cubes that is now under the cup. Although very simple in nature, the class really enjoyed the surprise element of the game, and it provided great practice with the concept of one more and one less.

Reader's Workshop
Last week in Reader's Workshop we continued to enjoy old story book favorites and took a closer look at the popular titles Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and The Very Busy Spider. The children are getting more comfortable using their excited reading voices to bring their stories to life, and are even taking a closer look at the text to start to identify words they know how to read.

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop we continue to work on our All About books. Students who have finished their All About Boyden books have now moved onto writing about other topics they are familiar with including animals, foods, and places. We have also been practicing our sentence writing in class, and the students have been doing a fantastic job including words on their pages as they create All About books with repeating patterns!

The writers above are hard at work!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K!

Thank You Mrs. Dacko!
A big thank you to my right hand woman Mrs. Dacko for holding down the fort and keeping our routines and procedures consistent last week while I was out sick! Mrs. Dacko is truly the best and I would be lost without her! I'm looking forward to being back at school this week and I'm crossing my fingers for a healthier holiday season and 2023 for me and my family!

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters v. and w. They also practiced reading the sight word "have". Our color of the week was gray!

The class continues to enjoy "writing the room" and looking for words that contain our Fundations letters!

Math
In math the class began to explore the concept of skip counting, specifically counting by 2s! They used the wheels on a bicycle to practice this skill, and even worked hard to draw a bicycle on their own.

The class also used their bicycle pictures to notice patterns in the numbers when counting by 2s. A big thank you to Boyden's math coach, Mrs. Rinaldi, for helping with some of our math lessons last week!

Reader's Workshop
Last week in Reader's Workshop we continued to enjoy old storybook favorites such as The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Caps for Sale, and The Carrot Seed. We learned that readers use their voice to make stories come alive, and that as we become experts on a book, we should be able to retell more of the story each time.

The students above work hard to create character puppets to go with the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff. These puppets helped them to practice their character voices when retelling the story.

The students also practiced their sequencing skills as they ordered the events from the story Caps for Sale.

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop the children continued to work on their all about Boyden books! While most students continue to write by adding labels to their pictures, the concept of sentences was introduced to the class last week. They learned that sentences are a group of words that always begin with an uppercase letter, end with an ending mark, and include finger spaces.

The class used whiteboards to practice writing simple sentences.

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon as we continue to learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K!
