I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed the beautiful weather! We have a fun and exciting week ahead in Room 115. A friendly reminder that tomorrow is Black and Orange Day. Students who wish to participate are welcome to wear these colors. Please no Halloween costumes.

Important Dates:

November 3rd:
Parent/Teacher Conferences
6:00-8:00pm (Virtual Only)

Announcements:

Welcome Mrs. Miles!
This week Mrs. Miles, one of Boyden's reading specialists, will begin working with the students in our classroom during our reading time. During her visits Mrs. Miles will administer asessments, play games, and do various reading readiness activities. Please DO NOT PANIC if your child comes home and says they had the opportunity to work with Mrs. Miles. Her visits are meant to support my instruction and allow her to get to know Boyden's youngest and newest students. If I have concerns about your child's reading progress I will certainly let you know.

Quiet Time Towels
Your child's quiet time towel was sent home on Thursday for washing. Please return your child's clean towel to school tomorrow for Quiet Time. Thank you!

Do These Look Familiar?
The sweatshirts/jackets below have been missing their owners for quite some time! If you recognize one of them please let me know and I'll be sure to send it home with your child. It is helpful if you can put your child's name or initials in their jackets/sweatshirts as it's not uncommon for things to get lost or for children to have the same items.

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters d and s. We also practiced reading the sight words "it" and "in". Our color of the week was purple!

During Fundations we also practiced matching letters and sounds that have already been taught using our Fundations puzzles pieces!

On Friday some students chose to make snakes for the letter S during their choice time!

Math
In math we began our second unit in the Bridges curriculum. This unit will continue to focus on the numbers 5 and 10, and last week we practiced showing different number combinations that make 5 and 10 using cubes and ten frames.

Reader's Workshop
Last week in Reader's Workshop we began our first unit in the Lucy Calkins reading program titled "We are Readers". We kicked off our first unit by taking a tour around Boyden School and finding words we knew. "Stop", "Exit", "Gym", "Boys" and "Girls" were some of the words we identified. We then practiced reading other words we knew in the world around us. These words, also known as enviromental print, included names of stores and restaurants such as Target, Walmart, McDonald's, Home Depot, and many more! Lastly, we ended the week by learning the difference between stories and teaching books. It was a busy week of reading in our classroom!

The students above are working hard to learn information from teaching (nonfiction) books by reading the pictures.
Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop last week we began our Show and Tell unit! The class did a wonderful job drawing the items they brought in from home, and even began "writing" about their item by labeling their pictures with the beginning sound.

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K!

Show and Tell Unit
On Friday your child brought home a notice about our upcoming "Show and Tell" writing unit. In order to launch this unit successfully, the Kindergarten teachers are asking that each child bring in one special object to write about. It should be something that can stay at school for the week and is small enough to fit in a gallon size ziplock bag. Please have your child bring their object to school on Monday, October 24th (tomorrow) as we will be using them in class on Tuesday. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Quiet Time Towels
Quiet Time towels were sent home for washing on Friday. Please return your child's clean towel to school tomorrow (Monday). Thank you!

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters a and g. We also practiced reading the sight words "you" and "of". Our color of the week was brown!

Math
In math we completed the first unit in our new Bridges curriculum! Last week's lessons focused on patterns. The class learned that patterns are colors, pictures, words, or movements that repeat. In the week ahead we will start Unit 2 which will continue to strengthen your child's understanding of numbers to ten,

The students above create colorful fall patterns.

Reader's Workshop
Fall poems continued to be our focus in Reader's Workshop last week. We also learned about syllables which we now practice during Hegggerty time.

We had so much fun sorting ourselves by the number of syllables in our names! We discovered that the greatest number of friends have two syllables in their names.

Writer's Workshop
It was an exciting time in Writer's Workshop last week as we completed our illustrators unit! The children learned how to use a "big line" to organize their pictures and show objects that can be found in the sky, on the ground, and under the ground/water. We also learned that when our pictures include characters and a detailed setting we can tell stories about the work we create. Next week we will begin our Show and Tell unit in our Lucy Calkins program. Please be sure your child brings a small item from home to write about!

We are illustrators!

A silly picture was a must! 😂

SEL
On Wednesday we enjoyed a visit from Mrs. Audet who taught us to use colors to show different emotions during her Social/Emotional Learning lesson. We continue to welcome Mrs. Audet into our classroom every other Wednesday and enjoy the read alouds and activities that she provides!

Music
Last week in music the class got to use instruments for the very first time! Mrs. Cassani was thrilled to report that the friends in Room 115 did EXCELLENT listening and direction following. I am so incredibly proud of them!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow and play in the wonderful world that is K! :)

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters c and o. We also practiced reading the sight words "you" and "of".

Math
In math we completed Module 3 in our Bridges curriculum which focused on "Friendly Tens". During this module the students worked hard to count and match numbers to ten using ten frames. We also learned two new games that the children had the opportunity to play during Work Stations!

Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop we continue to enjoy reading fall poems! The children had a great time listening for rhyming words and identifying sight words we have been learning in class. We will continue to enjoy more fall poems in the week ahead!

Writer's Workshop
The class worked on their drawing skills as we continued with our illustration unit! Last week we practiced drawing cars, buses, and even whole playgrounds using familiar shapes. I am SO impressed with how far our drawing skills and pictures have come in the last few weeks!

School Safety
A big "thank you" to Officer Hart and Rebel from the Walpole PD who provided a fantastic safety presentation to the class on Thursday. Officer Hart gave age appropriate explanations of emergency procedures and what they entail. The biggest message for students was to STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN to the adults around them in an emergency situation.

It appeared as though Rebel had heard Officer Hart's presentation one too many times! 😂

OT Support
Another highlight of our week was getting to meet Boyden's two Occupational Therapists, Mrs. Carty and Mrs. Carty or Mrs. C as we called her (yes, they are related!). The Mrs. Carty's provided whole group instruction on proper body posture and pencil grasp. They also brought along some fun, fall themed center activities for the children to enjoy and help build their fine more skills and dexterity. One of the Mrs. Carty's will be back each month to provide more instruction on motor skills. We are very excited for their next visit!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon as we learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K!
