A specials calendar for the month of October will be sent home with your child tomorrow. Please note that tomorrow's special will be P.E./Gym.  Your child will need to wear/bring sneakers in order to participate. Thank you!

Curriculum Update:

Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed!
On Monday the class learned about and celebrated a beloved fall figure, Johnny Appleseed! Happy Birthday Johnny!

Fundations
Last week in Fundations the class learned about the letters m, and n. They also practiced reading the sight word "and".

Practicing our letter formation using whiteboards is always a class favorite!

Math
Last week in math the class enjoyed completing various apple themed activities which had them counting, making patterns, and ordering objects by size! They also continued to work in math stations and explore the math manipulatives we will be using frequently throughout the school year.

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop the class continued to develop their drawing skills. This week they reviewed how to draw people using shapes, and then learned how to add hair and facial expressions!

Media/STEM
It was an exciting week with Mrs. Moses in the Media Center/STEM Lab as the children got to practice using shelf markers! These shelf markers will hold a book's spot on the shelf as a child decides if it is a "just right" book for them. If not, back on the shelf it goes!

Lots of fun was had in music this week as well!

A highlight of MY week was getting to check in with the class on Friday! We enjoyed reading a story together and playing a game of Mrs. B Says. I can't wait to be back with them on Monday!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! Please see below for a few highlights from our classroom last week.

Announcements:

Quiet Time Towels
Due to the half day craziness Quiet Time towels were not sent home on Friday. Please expect them to come home at the end of this week. My apologies for the inconvenience!

Media/STEM Tomorrow!
Tomorrow (Monday) our class will visit the media/Stem lab. Please be sure your child returns their book from last week so that they are able to check out a new one. Thank you!

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations we learned about the letter t, b, and f. We also practiced the sight words "to" and "a".

Math
In math we began the first unit in our new Bridges curriculum! For our whole group lesson we practiced counting, sorting, and classifying shoes. The children then moved onto work stations where they got to explore math manipulatives such as unifix cubes, geoboards, pattern blocks, and polydrons.

During one of our whole group lessons we made a human graph and sorted ourselves by various shoe attributes including sneakers/not sneakers, laces/no laces, velcro/no velcro.

Writer's Workshop
Last week in Writer's Workshop we practiced a very important pre-writing skill, drawing! We learned that shapes such as circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles can be used to make pictures (and people too!). We also welcomed one of Boyden's amazing reading teachers, Mrs. Miles, into our classroom as she helped kick off this very exciting illustration unit.

Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop literacy and science came together last week as we read many poems and books about apples! We will continue our apple exploration this week as we also learn about Johnny Appleseed in preparation for his birthday on September 26th!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K!

Curriculum Update:

Literacy
Lots of Literacy learning was happening in our classroom last week! We read the story The Little School Bus by Carol Roth which helped us answer the question, "How do children get to school?" We also began our Fundations program which taught us important practices such as how to hold our writing tools and have proper body posture, as well as how to "sky write" our letters. At the end of the week the students were introduced to the letter "T"!

Rhyming was another focus of my instruction last week, and the students enjoyed participating in both whole group and partner activities to help practice this skill! We also had a blast making our own Rhyming Dust Bunnies after ready the book with the same title by Jan Thomas.

Dot Day!
Another highlight of our week was celebrating International Dot Day on September 15th! We marked this day by reading the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and creating our own colorful watercolor dots!

Media/Stem
The children continue to enjoy our new special, Media/Stem, with Mrs. Moses! Last week the class participated in many Dot Day activites and even played an exciting game of musical books (like musical chairs!). This fun game gave the class a sneak peak at some of the titles available in the media center as they will be allowed to start checking out books during this week's visit!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at out week! Please check back soon to soon for all that is new in Room 115!
