Reader's Workshop
Before vaction we finished our latest unit in Reader's Workshop! During this unit the children continued to practice their reading superpowers and apply their superpower skills to more challenging texts. To celebrate all of their hard work, each child channeled their inner Luisa and wrote about a superpower they put extra effort into strengthening over the past few weeks.

Math
In math we continued to practice "building" teen numbers using base ten blocks! The class enjoyed applying this understanding as they created their own base ten gardens!

The class also practiced both new and previously taught math skills as they completed "April Showers" themed centers.

Writer's Workshop
The celebrating continued as we completed our "How To" unit in Writer's Workshop before the break. The class was incredibly proud of all of their hard work, and had a great time sharing one of their finished pieces with a few of Boyden's fifth grade students.

As a culminating activity we did one last "How To" writing piece, how to make a pizza! We had a great time transforming our classroom into a pizza palor and writing the process of making a pizza step by step!

Click here for a live action view of the pizza chefs at work!

After completing our "How Tos" the children decided to take the fun a step further by turning our dramatic play area into a pizza restaurant! Everyone got busy making paper pizzas, menus, and signs for our newest theme. I can't wait to watch the class continue to play and enjoy this space after the break!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!

Reader's Workshop
Last week in Reader's Workshop we completed Unit 3 which focused on strengthen our reading supper powers as we tackle more challenging texts! The children have worked SO hard throughout this unit and I couldn't be more proud of their progress! Since last week's sight/high frequency word was "little", we also took the time to enjoy the book Little Quack by Lauren Thompson.

After reading the book, the class enjoyed writing about their favorite duck from the story and completing a paper ripping craft!

Fundations
In Fundations we continue to learn about the digraphs sh, th, ch, wh, and ck! We are also learning to distinguish between long and short vowel sounds, and have learned that a vowel makes the long sound when it says its name!

Math
In math we continue to practice making and counting teen numbers using base ten blocks. Please click here to listen to a song we've used in class to help build our understanding of this concept!

Math centers were a great way for the students to practice their teen number counting skills. Our centers last week included: a base ten cut, glue, color, base ten Boom Cards (on Chromebooks), write the room, and a spin and color activity!

Social Studies
Last week in Social Studies we learned about the holiday, Ramandan. We discovered that Ramandan is a holiday that is celebrated by Muslims all over the world and takes place for an entire month! During this time people focus on doing generous acts and being kind to others. The children were also fascinated to learn that many people fast during the daylight hours when celebrating Ramandan.

After learning about Ramadan the class drew and wrote about ways that everyone can be kind!

Unicorn Day!
Did you know that April 9th is National Unicorn Day? Since this fun day fell on a Saturday this year, we decided to celebrate on Friday. We had a magical time participating in many unicorn themed activities!

We had a great time reading unicorn themed books and poems, completing a CVC word matching activity, and even playing a unicorn themed memory game at center time!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!

3 Star Work!
With first grade right around the corner and spring fever in full swing, I am encouraging the students to continue to put forth their best effort towards their classwork. One way I am increasing student motivation is by awarding not 1, not 2, but THREE stars on work that goes above and beyond! Three star work must be complete, neat (to the best of the child's abilities) and include at least 5 colors. I'm excited to see that many students are already embracing the challenge of producing 3 star work, and I hope this continues to be a positive incentive in our classroom!

Markers
Thank you SO much to the families who donated new markers to our classroom. The children were thrilled to have some fresh supplies to use, and their work has become much more colorful as a result! Thank you so much again for your kindness and generosity. It is greatly appreciated!

Library Tomorrow!

Curriculum Update

Reader's Workshop
Last week in Reader's Workshop we continued to strengthen our reading muscles as we practiced using super sound and picture power to read new and more challenging texts. We also had a special guest, Mrs. Fuchanio, who taught us not to be tricked by sight words that might have an inflected ending (i.e. seeing, looked). Although these words might look a little different, the sight words we've practiced are still there!

Boy she sure does look familiar...

Fundations
In Fundations we continue to practice reading consonant, vowel, consonant, or CVC words. We also began learning about the diagraphs sh, th, ch, wh, and ck, and discussed the digraphs are two letters that make one new sound.

Math
Last week we revisited our teen numbers and practiced making these numbers with base ten blocks!

Light it up Blue!
It was wonderful to see so much blue in our classroom as we recognized Autism Awareness and Acceptance day on Friday and we couldn't have been more excited to light it up blue!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!
