Curriculum Update:

This Week's Sight Words: if, on

Fundations
Last week in Fundations we learned about the letters S and D! The class had a fun time making slithery snakes to help them remember the Fundations letter, picture, sound: s, snake, /s/! We also practiced reading the sight words it and in.

Reader's Workshop
Last week marked the end of our Old Storybook Favorites unit in Reader's Workshop. We had a fantastic time reading and retelling classic stories such as The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Mrs. Wishy Washy, The Three Little Pigs, and The Carrot Seed throughout this unit. We celebrated our reading success with a storybook parade which included the three other Kindergarten classes.

Math
Last week in math we continued to practice logging into our Chromebooks and accessing the ST Math program. On Friday we had an exciting visit from Boyden's technology specialist Mrs. Carroll, who brought Osmos for us to try! The class had an absolute blast using the Osmos to practice ways to make different numbers. In the week ahead we will begin number writing!

Writer's Workshop
Not only did we finish up a unit in Reader's Workshop last week, but we completed a unit in Writer's Workshop as well! During last week's lessons the children worked hard to publish their stories by including color, labels, speech bubbles, and covers to their pieces. On Friday we had our first writer's celebration, and each child had the opportunity to share their finished story with the class. I am SO proud of how hard the children worked throughout this unit and I look forward to watching them continue to grow as writers throughout the year!

Science
Last week was a spectacular one for science as we learned all about pumpkins! We began our exploration by learning about the parts of a pumpkin and the pumpkin life cycle. All of this learning culminated in an exciting surprise on Friday when we actually opened and studied a real pumpkin!

The students above construct cube towers as they estimate the height of our pumpkin. The actual height: 35 cubes!

Seed counting was another exciting (and gooey!) part of our pumpkin exploration. We were shocked to learn that our pumpkin had 438 seeds! That's A LOT of seeds!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! I hope everyone has a safe and Happy Halloween!

This Week's Sight Words: it, in

Fundations
Last week in Fundations we learned about the letters g and a. We also practiced reading the sight words "was" and "for".

The class had a fun time making their own gumball machines as we learned about the letter g!

Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop we continued to enjoy old storybook favorites last week. During our lessons we practiced retelling stories such as The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Mrs. Wishy Washy, and The Three Little Pigs using character voices. We also practiced using special connecting words such as "and then" to put the storybook pages together while retelling the events.

On Friday the class had a blast making puppets for the characters in The Three Little Pigs. We used these puppets to retell the events of the story and practice using our character voices.

Math
Last week in Math we continued our unit on counting and identifying numbers. While the expectation is that students can count orally to 30, they only need to identify (visually) and count physical objects to 20. Identifying/reading numbers from 10-20 has proven to be especially tricky for many friends, so we will continue to practice that skill in math this week.

We also broke out the Chrome Books last week and practiced logging into ST Math! We met ST Math's mascot Gigi and began working on some number puzzles.

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop we have transitioned from writing teaching books and are now practicing writing stories! Last week we learned to plan our stories page by page, and added more details to our pieces. It is important to note that telling stories primarily through pictures is still completely appropriate at this time of year. As we continue with our Fundations lessons and learn more letters and sounds, our word writing skills will begin to develop!

Good Luck Ms. Lane!
Friday was a bittersweet day as we said good-bye to our student teacher Ms. Lane. It was wonderful having her be a part of the Room 202 family for the first eight weeks of school, and we wish her good luck as she continues her student teaching journey in first grade!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!

Thank You Ms. Lane!
A big Room 202 "thank you" to our Framingham State student teacher Ms. Lane! Ms. Lane has been with us since the first day of school and will be finishing up her time in Kindergarten this week before she heads to her first grade placement. We are so thankful to have had Ms. Lane as part of the Room 202 family for these first (and VERY important) few weeks of school. We will miss you Ms. Lane!

Media Monday
A friendly reminder that our media/library day is Monday. Please be sure to have your child bring back their book so that they are able to check out a new one. Thanks so much in advance for your help! :)

Curriculum Update:

Reader's Workshop
Last week in Reader's Workshop we discussed and explored old storybook favorites! We learned that when we hear a story over and over we can start to recite/read that story ourselves!

Fundations
In Fundations we learned all about the letters c and o last week. We also practice reading the sight words "of" and "you".

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop we continue to practicing stretching out our words and writing all the sounds we hear. We also are working hard to remember and apply all of the skills we have learned so far to make our writing the best it can be! On Friday, Mrs. Miles helped to kick off the next part of our writing unit which involves getting ideas for, and practicing storytelling!

Science
Last week in science we studied squirrels! We discovered that squirrels are great balancers and can use their tails for many things, including keeping themselves warm and dry. We also learned that squirrels can trick other animals by pretending to bury acorns when they actually have them stored away in their cheek pouches. So cool! On Thursday we put our observation skills to the test as we went on a squirrel hunt! Unfortunately we didn't find any squirrels but we did enjoy seeing all of the nature around Boyden School! Your child's unfinished squirrel observation paper was sent home last week. While I told the children they could finish their paper at home if they happen to see a squirrel, this is not a formal homework assignment and I am not expecting anything to be returned to school

It was another great week in Room 202! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! :)

Curriculum Update

Reader's Workshop
Last week we practiced the skill of re-reading! We learned that when we re-read books we have seen before we start to notice new details and even words we might know. We also practiced adding a "pinch of ourselves" to the teaching books we read by marking pages we were especially interested in with a sticky note.

Fundations
In Fundations last week we learned about the letters i and u! We now know that these two letters have a special name, vowels, and vowels are letters that make more than one sound. We also practiced reading the sight words is and his.

Making our own igloos was the perfect extension activity for learning about the letter i!

Rubylicious!
On Thursday we enjoyed a fantastic virtual visit from author Victoria Kann. She read her latest title from the Pinkalicious series, Rubylicious! Information about ordering your own copy of Rubylicious was sent home last week. Order are due tomorrow, Tuesday, October 12th. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Chrome Book Care
A big Boyden "thank you" to our technology specialist Mrs. Carroll and a few of her fifth grade helpers who stopped by Room 202 last week to teach us about caring for our Chrome books! We learned a few do's and don'ts of Chrome book care, and even practiced logging into our personal Chrome books using our newly assigned usernames and passwords!

Math
In math we continued to work on counting to 20! The students below practice their counting skills as they completed various math centers including Tic Tac Teen and a pumpkin seed count and color.
