Q and U Wedding!
On Monday, December 21st we will be celebrating the wedding of Q in U in Room 202! (see Fundations update below for more info). Upon receiving their wedding invitations on Friday, some students expressed interest in dressing up for the occasion. While formal wedding attire is NOT required for our celebration, students who would like wear something special are more than welcome.

Raffle Winners
A BIG congratulations to Kylah and Lexie who won two amazing prizes from our Boyden PAC! Although the Pancake Breakfast was certainly missed this year, it was exciting to still be able to enjoy some aspects of a beloved Boyden tradition. Thank you PAC!

Curriculum Update

Math
Last week in math we continued our unit on addition! We reviewed that addition is the process of joining two groups together, and practice writing addition number sentences using the + and = signs.

The students above practice writing addition number sentences during a Write the Room activity.

Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop we practiced bringing our stories to life by using our voices! We learned that great readers use expression when reading, and can use their voices in a "sing songy" way to make their story more enjoyable to their listener. At the end of the week we also began to explore the importance of punctuation marks.

Fundations
Last week in Fundations the children were introduced to our last two letters, z and q! During our lessons we learned that q is usually followed by the letter u in the words that we read and write. To reinforce this idea, we will be having a wedding for q and u in class this week as we celebrate their life-long union!

A Fundations scavenger hunt was the perfect way to celebrate the end of our unit on lowercase letters!

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop we continue to revise our true story pieces. Last week our lessons focused on writing amazing story beginnings and working with partners to make our work the best it can be!

The children did a great job sharing their work while also keeping a safe distance!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! I hope everyone enjoys a wonderful holiday and winter vacation. See you in 2021!

A Peek At Our Week!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend and enjoying this beautiful weather! Please take a moment to enjoy a glimpse of all the great learning that happened in Room 202 last week. The children are working incredibly hard and I couldn't be more proud of them!

Important Dates:

Winter Break
December 24th-January 3rd

Announcements:

Chromebooks
A friendly reminder that the Kindergarten students will be bringing their Chromebooks to and from school each day in the event that we go remote unexpectedly. Please be sure your child has their Chromebook in their backpack every morning as we will be using them in class as well . Thank you so much for all of your help!

Curriculum Update:

Math
Last week in math we started Unit 7 which focuses on addition! We began our exploration by learning about the concept of joining, or putting groups together. This was followed by the introduction of the + and = signs. We will continue to practice adding and writing addition number sentences in class this week before we transition to subtraction.

Before introducing the students to the concept of addition, we first explored the idea of joining, or putting groups together. The students above can be seen practicing this skill as they joined cube "trains" together and counted their new total number of cubes.

Fundations
In Fundations the children learned about the letters X and Y and were introduced to the sight/snap words "and" and "this".

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop we have been working hard to make our work more "readable". This means we must remember to keep our handwriting neat, include lots of letters in our words, and use finger spaces. The class did a wonderful job helping me revise one of my writing pieces to make it more readable before applying these skills to their own true stories.

Reader's Workshop
It was a VERY exciting time for Reader's Workshop last week as the class learned about their final reading superpower, persistence power! We learned that a persistent reader never gives up and may even have to use more than one superpower when tackling an unknown word.

On Friday we celebrated all of our reading superpowers with a very special super readers celebration! Be sure to check your child's Seesaw page for a video of us reciting our superhero pledge, and a picture of your super reader with their special certificate!

The class was SO excited to receive a very special mystery gift from the League of Super Hero Readers! We absolutely LOVED the superhero capes and masks they sent us!

Even Mr. Dearborn joined in on the fun!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202! :)

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend and stayed safe and warm
during last night's snow event! It was a busy week in Room 202 and I greatly
enjoyed getting to know your kind, funny, and helpful children. Please enjoy
a few highlights from our time together that are featured below! :)

Important Dates:

Parent/Teacher Conferences
December 8th, 9th, 10th, and 15th

Winter Break

Announcements:

Parent Teacher Conferences
A friendly reminder that virtual Parent/Teacher Conferences will begin this week! If you have not scheduled an appointment please contact me directly as the Sign Up Genius link is no longer active. I look forward to meeting about your child's progress!

Curriculum Update:

Math
Last week in math we completed our unit on teen numbers! The children have become quite proficient at counting and writing their numbers from 11-20 and I couldn't be more thrilled!

The students above are working hard to put their teen numbers in the correct order.

After reading the story If You Give a Mouse a Cookie the class enjoyed completing their own cookie counting books which had them counting, writing, and representing the numbers 11-20!

Our cookie theme continued as the children complete a fun, teen number cookie activity in Seesaw.  Feel free to login to their Seesaw account to view their finished products!

Fundations
In Fundations last week we learned about the letters v and w, and the children did a fantastic job practicing the sound and formation of these two letters. The sight words "yes" and "no" were also introduced. We practiced reading these new sight words during Morning Meeting by answering various yes or no questions such as: "Do you like winter?" and "Do you have a sibling?"

Readering Workshop
It was incredible to see all of the hard work that is happening during our Reading Workshop time as the class continues to use our new Lucy Calkins reading program. Last week we practiced using our reading superpowers and were introduced to two new strategies, snap word power and sound power. Snap word power encourages the children to read previously introduced snap words (also known as sight words) automatically, and sound power teaches the students to look at the beginning letter of an unknown word. The class is very skilled at using their reading super powers and we will continue to practice implementing them during our independent, read to self, time.

The class was excited to add new books to their browsing bags on Friday!

Writing Workshop
It was a busy time for writing in our classroom last week as the children continued to work hard on their true, real life stories. During last week's lessons we learned about using our snap (aka sight) words in our writing, and even created our own individual word walls! We also practiced using our "storyteller voices" to make our work more exciting to listen to!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202! :)
