A Peek At Our Week!

Sunday, March 15, 2020 No comments
I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy in these very uncertain times! I will do my best to stay in touch and provide as many updates as I can over the next few weeks. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I will do my best to address them. For now, please enjoy the wonderful learning that happened in our classroom last week <3.

Announcements:

Curriculum Packet
On Friday your child came home with a packet of curriculum materials in the event that school would be cancelled for an extended period of time. Please don't worry if you child was absent and did not receive their packet! I hope to send out additional activities soon that can be completed along with, or in place of these materials. Please note that at this time the completion of these activities is optional.

Curriculum Update:

Literacy
Last week in Literacy the students were introduced to the sight words go, from, and here. We also learned about words that start with beginning blends like clam, spin, and plant.

In Fundations the students have been learning to read nonsense words like "naf", "pif", and "dom". During Center Time last week the children practiced this skill by playing a fun game called Dump Truck! Players picked cards and practiced reading the nonsense words they selected. If you picked a dump truck card you had to put all of you nonsense words back into the bucket. Womp! Womp! This interactive game ( as seen above) was a very engaging way for the students to practice this new skill!

Math
In math the children were introduced to base ten blocks as they continued to learn about teen numbers!

Writing
In writing we recently began a unit which guides the students on constructing their own "All About" books. One exciting feature of this type of writing is the creation of a table of contents! I am extremely proud (and incredibly impressed!) with the work the students have produced during this unit so far!

The table of contents above outlines the chapters in a book about tigers
1. What is a tiger?
2. What does a tiger eat?
3. Where do they live?
4. How they look

Science
Last week in science we discussed the VERY relevant topic of germs! We learned how germs can enter our bodies and the best practices for getting rid of them. Our lesson ended with a hands on way (literally) to show the importance of cleaning our hands and which methods are most/least effective.

Each table was asked to touch a piece of bread and given different instructions for doing so. Two tables touched the bread with unwashed or "dirty" hands. One table touched the break after using hand sanitizer, and the last table touched their bread after washing their hands with soap and water. Unfortunately we will not be able to see the results of the experiment until we return to school, but this activity is one you can easily recreate at home! Looking for a way to extend the activity? Have your child create a science "journal" using a few sheets of paper and draw their observations of the bread every few days.

Looking for another way to illustrate the importance of hand washing to combat germs? Check out this awesome activity!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Stay safe and I hope to see you soon! :)

A big Boyden "Thank You" to Mrs. Patterson and Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer who came to read to our class last week! If you are interested in coming in to be a guest reader there are plenty of slots still available. Click here to schedule your visit!

Curriculum Update:

Literacy
In literacy we continued to practice reading the sight words one, two, three, four, and five. We also worked on tapping out CVC words with more challenging letters such as x, qu, and z in Fundations.

The students enjoyed using stamps to make CVC words during center time last week!

The class got up and moving during Fundations last week as student volunteers worked together to make CVC words!
Math
Last week in math we began an exciting unit on teen numbers! The children learned that a teen number must always start with the number 1 and have one group of ten and then some more! While the class is very familiar with tens frames at this point in the school year, next week we will take out the base ten blocks and practice representing teen numbers with a new tool!

Math centers provided the children with the opportunity to practice new skills such as representing teen numbers, as well as review previously taught skills such as decomposing numbers to 10.

Mrs. Tilton Visits!
On Thursday we welcomed Mrs. Tilton into our classroom for her last visit before she starts her maternity leave! While Mrs. Tilton is gone our school adjustment counselor, Mrs. Aissis, will be working with us as we continue to develop and strengthen our social/emotional skills.

During her lesson Mrs. Tilton read the story Personal Space Camp by Julia Cook and discussed the importance of leaving enough room around our bodies in order to make ourselves, and others, comfortable.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
One exciting highlight of our week was celebrating the birthday of  the iconic children's book author, Dr. Seuss! We had a great time reading many Dr. Seuss stories and practicing our rhyming skills as we celebrated the big day!

We had many brave friends who said they WOULD be willing to try green eggs and ham!

The students above had a great time reading Dr. Seuss stories with their second grade buddies.

As a guest reader you may share a book that was a favorite of yours growing up, or a favorite of your student. If you would like to read but need assistance making a book selection I am more than happy to help! Use the comment box on the digital sign up to tell me what you plan to read or comment "need book" if you would like me to pick one for you. It is important to note that each guest readers visit should be about 5-10 minutes long. I have created an online sign up for all those that are interested. Click here to view the dates and times that are available!  In the event that the times listed are not convenient for you please don't hesitate to let me know and I will adjust our schedule as best I can to accommodate your visit. ALSO it is always fun to keep our guest readers a surprise so mums the word!

Please be on the lookout for an email from Mr. Dearborn about how you can schedule your conference. I look forward to meeting with everyone soon!

Quiet Time Towels
Your child brought home their quiet time towel for washing on Friday. Please return clean towels to school tomorrow. Thank you so much for your help!

Novel Effects
Looking for a fun way to jazz up your bedtime stories? Check out Novel Effects! This free app adds background music and sound effects to your child's favorite stories. We have been using it in the classroom and the kids can't get enough!
Curriculum Update:

Literacy
In Literacy the children continue to practice tapping out CVC words such as mat, dog, and lip. We were also introduced to the sight words one, two, three, four and five!

The students enjoyed finding their "matches" as they completed a morning meeting activity which reinforced the tapping concepts we have been working so hard on!

Math
Last week in math we continued to decompose (break apart) numbers and learned all of the ways to make 8 and 9! We also practice writing the different ways using tricky number sentences which placed the sum and equals sign BEFORE the two numbers we were adding!

Number bracelets (shown above) were a great hands on way for the students to show ways to make numbers 5-10.

Indoor recess didn't get these kiddos down! It was SO fun to see their creativity at work!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!
