Welcome Mrs. Maw!
On Wednesday we welcomed Mrs. Debbie Maw to Room 202! It was wonderful to get to know Mrs. Maw and familiarize her with our classroom schedule and routines. I am VERY confident that your children are in great hands as we enter the last leg of the school year. Please don't hesitate to contact Mrs. Maw directly with any questions or concerns. She can be reached at: dmaw@walpole.k12.ma.us. I will also be checking my email from time to time as well if there is something I can help you with.

Curriculum:

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears and discussed the question "How can an adventure cause trouble?" We also learned about the letter "G" and practiced the sight words one, two, three, four, and five!

A big "Thank You" to our Elementary Literacy Coordinator, Mrs. Findley, who taught a Fundations lesson in our classroom last week!
Math
We continued to learn about decomposing numbers in Topic 9 last week, and took a closer look at the ways to make the number 10!

Rock Your Socks!
It was wonderful to see so many children "Rock Their Socks" in honor of Down Syndrome Awareness Day!

Designing and writing about their own funky socks was a highlight of the day!

Thanks so much for stopping by to take a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!

It's hard to believe Sunday night is here already. Blarney! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and a very happy St. Patrick's Day!

Important Dates:

March 21st:
Rock Your Socks!
Students are encouraged to wear bright, bold, and/or silly socks to bring awareness to World Down Syndrome Day

Announcements:

A BIG Boyden thank you to the Harney Academy of Irish Dance for putting on a wonderful assembly for us on Friday. It was amazing to see all of the hard work the dancers put in, and was also a great way to get into the spirit of St. Patrick's Day! A special congratulations to the students who participated in that after school enrichment program and were brave enough to show us what they learned on stage. Great job!

Uh oh!
Spring fever has officially hit Room 202, and many students are requiring friendly reminders about following classroom rules and demonstrating expected behaviors. Starting this week I will be using "Uh oh" slips as a way to communicate when these reminders are needed. In the event that your child receives an "Uh oh" slip, please discuss the behavior of concern with them, sign the slip and return it to school. It is my hope that this new approach will strengthen the communication between home and school and provide useful information about the social, emotional, and behavior skills we are working on in class. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!

Curriculum:

Literacy
Last week in literacy we read the story One Little Mouse by Dori Chaconas, and discussed the question, "What adventures can animals have?". We also practiced reading the number words one, two, three, four, and five, and learned about words that start with beginning blends like slide, brick, and green.

Writing
The St. Patrick's Day holiday was a great topic for writing last week and the class enjoyed sharing their ideas about what they would do if they caught a leprechaun!

Math
Last week in math we continued to decompose numbers and practiced the different ways to make 8 and 9! The class also enjoyed completing a St. Patrick's Day word problem. This week we will finish our unit by finding different ways to make the number 10!

Jack Hartmann makes wonderful videos for kids which help to introduce and practice a wide range of skills from reading, to math, and even science. Click here to see one of Jack's videos about Number Pairs. We have used these videos often in class during our unit on decomposing numbers!

Thanks so much for stopping by to take a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!

Quiet Time Towels
Your child brought home their quiet time towel for washing on Friday. Please return clean towels to school tomorrow. Thank you so much for your help!

Curriculum Update:

Literacy
Last week in literacy we read the story My Lucky Day by Keiko Kasza, and discussed the question, "What adventures can you have on a lucky day?". We also continued to review the sight words do, are, and that and also learned about the letter L!

We had a great time designing our own llamas after reading the story 'Is your Mama a Llama?' by Deborah Guarino.

In Fundations the students have been learning to read nonsense words like "naf", "pif", and "dom". During Center Time last week the children practiced this skill by playing a fun game called Dump Truck! Players picked cards and practiced reading the nonsense words they selected. If you picked a dump truck card you had to put all of you nonsense words back into the bucket. Womp! Womp! This interactive game was a very engaging way for the students to practice this new skill!

Math
Last week in math we continued to decompose (break apart) numbers and learned all of the ways to make 6 and 7! We also practice writing the different ways using tricky number sentences which placed the sum and equals sign BEFORE the two numbers we were adding!

Guest Readers
A big Boyden "Thank You" to Mr. Fazio and Mrs. Cady who came to read to our class this week! After hearing Mr. Fazio read Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, we decided to answer the question: "Would you like green eggs and ham?" by creating our own class graph!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend! It sure seems like March is coming in a like a lion with the snow that is predicted for tonight and tomorrow. Yikes! Let's hope the saying is true and it goes out like a lamb!

Announcements:

Maternity Leave
It's hard to believe March is already here and my maternity leave is right around the corner! As Mr. Dearborn shared in his email on Friday, my maternity leave will officially begin on Monday, March 25th with my last day being Friday, March 23rd. I am thrilled to share that Mrs. Debbie Maw will be the long-term substitute during this time! Mrs. Maw had had many roles in the Walpole Public Schools for the past several years including being a first grade teacher, Instructional Support Professional, and has been a long-term substitute for other maternity leaves as well. I am excited to welcome Mrs. Maw into our classroom on March 20th so that she is able to meet the children and learn our routines. With the continued support of Mrs. Dacko, I know our class will be in great hands! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have!

Guest Readers!
Last week your child came home with a notice inviting family, friends, and siblings into our classroom to be a guest reader in honor of Read Across America month! Please be sure to send in your availability if you are interested in reading to our class!

Curriculum:

Literacy
Last week in literacy we read the story Bunny Time by Rick Walton. While reading this story we discussed the question, "What adventures do you have throughout the day?". We also were introduced to the new sight words: do, are, and that, and practiced the sound of the letter "H".

Math
Last week in math we began Topic 9 which focuses on composing and decomposing numbers to 10. We had a great time finding all the ways to make the number 4 and 5, and are looking forward to continuing this work with the numbers 6 and 7 this week!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
One exciting highlight of our week was celebrating the birthday of  the iconic children's book author, Dr. Seuss! We had a great time reading many Dr. Seuss stories and practicing our rhyming skills in preparation for the big day.

Self-selected Dr. Seuss themed centers were a great way for the children to practice number identification, addition, rhyming, and sight word reading skills!

Our class also celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday by participating in a school-wide "Read In"! It was so neat to see every student and teacher at Boyden School lining the halls and reading at the same time!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
