Happy Birthday!
Our class had a fantastic time celebrating the 116th birthday of the Teddy Bear last week! Wearing our jammies and snuggling with our furry friends was definitely a highlight of the day!

Curriculum

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the book Animal Babies in the Grasslands by Jennifer Schofield. When reading this selection we discussed the question, "Where do animals live?" and also explored animal babies and their parents! We learned that a baby lion is called a cub, a baby kangaroo is called a joey, and a baby prairie dog is called a pup! We also learned about the sound that "P" makes and were introduced to THREE new sight words "we", "my" and "like". In Fundations we learned about the letter H, K, and L.
It sure was a busy week!

The class enjoyed completing literacy centers last week. One highlight was the introduction of a new center, Whisper Phones! (See above)

Math
In math we continued to explore numbers 1 to 10. We worked hard to deepen our understanding of the ten frame and how it can be used to show numbers,  and also completed the number books we have been working on for several weeks now. We will conclude our exploration of numbers to 10 this week, and will begin learning about the numbers 10 to 20 after the Thanksgiving break!

Writing
Writing has become a big (and exciting!) focus in our classroom during the months of October and November. The children have been introduced to the concept of capitalization and punctuation as well as the need for "finger spaces" between our words. It is important to remember that writing is a VERY developmental process. At this point in the school year I am looking for the students to be able to write the beginning and ending letters in the words they hear. For example, the word "star" may appear as "sr". As beginning and ending sounds are mastered I will begin working with your child to hear middle sounds!

The students above shared their Weekend Writing with the class. Narrative, or personal experience writing, has been a great way to get the class excited about the writing process!

Last week the class learned about labeling! Labeling pictures is often a great way to engage beginning writers as they do not need to be as concerned with the conventions of writing such as capitalization and punctuation. The class enjoyed taking a Gallery Walk at the end of our labeling lesson and seeing the work of their peers!

Thanks SO much for stopping by to learn about all of the fun and exciting things happening in Room 202! I hope everyone has a wonderful week and a very Happy Thanksgiving!
