We enjoyed using the Touchview to identify synonyms and antonyms!

We also enjoyed learning all about igloos as we practiced reading words with the short i sound! ❄

Math
Last week in math we continued to explore numbers 0-10. Our week began by learning about tally marks and how they can be helpful for organizing our numbers and counting by fives. The class had a great time representing numbers 5-10 by using popsicle sticks as tally marks!

We used the poem/chant "1, 2, 3, 4, number 5 shuts the door" to help us remember that our fifth tally mark should be diagonal, making a set of tally marks look like a gate!

On Friday we enjoyed a visit from the ST Math mascot, JiJi! JiJi presented us with a special certificate that celebrated a fantastic start on our ST Math journeys!

Curriculum Update:

Into Reading
Last week in our Into Reading program we continued to answer the essential question: What makes each of us special? We read the stories I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont and ABC I Like Me! by Nancy Carlson to help us deepen our understanding that our unique traits and differences are what set us apart from others. Last week's lessons taught us to identify the topic, theme, and central idea of stories, and we explored to concept of letters verses words as well. In phonics the students learned about the letters n and d, as well as the sight/heart words to and do. It sure was a busy week!

Math
In math we continue to explore the numbers 0-10 through the use of ten frames! The students enjoyed participating in their first Write the Room activity on Friday where they looked for ten frame cards around the classroom, and wrote the number that appeared on each. It was a great way for us to get up and moving at the end of the week!

Writing
In writing we continue to practice our drawing skills! Last week the students drew houses and boats using shapes that they know. In the week ahead we will explore drawing characters and settings, a skill the aligns beautifully with our Intro Reading curriculum!

A Peek Inside Specials
The students had a great time using watercolor paints in art class last week!

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend despite the mostly dreary weather. Please see below for important dates, announcements and curriculum updates from Room 115! ๐Ÿ‚

October 31st:
Black and Orange Spirit Day! ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿงก

Announcements:

Chrysanthemum Name Project
On Friday our class read the story Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, and discussed the importance of kindness, and how our individual differences make us unique and special! Each child brought home an orange card that asks them to discuss the meaning behind their name with an adult at home, and have their adult write a sentence or two about how their name came to be. Please note that this assignment is completely optional, but I do look forward to hearing the stories behind the names of the friends in our class who participate!

Into Reading
Last week in our Into Reading program, we began our second unit by reading the book I Am Rene, the Boy by Rene Colato Lainez. We also answered a new essential question: What makes each of us special? Last week's lessons taught us to identify the problem and solution in a story, and we explored the concept of opinion as well. In phonics, the students learned about the letters s and b, along with the high frequency "heart" word as

To help us answer this module's essential question, "What makes each of us special?" the children drew pictures of some of their favorite things including their favorite food, animal, and activity. We enjoyed taking a gallery walk to view each student's work, and noticed things we all have in common.

A game of Memory was a great way to practice our rhyming skills!

Math
In math we began our second unit in the Bridges curriculum. This unit will continue to focus on the numbers 5 and 10, and last week we practiced showing different number combinations that make 5 and 10 using cubes and ten frames. We also compared numbers 0-10 using the <, >, and = symbols!

5th Grade Buddies!
On Friday we welcomed Ms. Jenke's fifth grade class to Room 115! Once a month our classes will get together to read and/or do other engaging math, science, or writing activities. It's a great way to get Boyden's oldest and youngest learners together to learn from each other!

Please note that picture retake day will take place on November 10th. We tried to stay as clean and dry as possible, but some of us definitely got a little wind-blown (me included! ๐Ÿคš).

An unexpected hour outside gave us lots of time for singing and dancing!

Welcome Mrs. Rinaldi!
We welcomed Boyden's math coach, Mrs. Rinaldi, to Room 115 last week! Mrs. Rinaldi introduced to ST Math, a computer based program which we will use throughout the year to practice and strengthen our math skills. The students enjoyed learning all about ST Math and starting to solve puzzles!
