Gifts for Kids 🎁

Our class will once again be participating in the Gifts for Kids program this holiday season (a notice with details was sent home on Friday). If you would like to contribute a gift, please send me an email or quick note to let me know that your child has permission to pick a tag from the class poster.  Thank you!

A big thank you to Vivian and Juliet from Mrs. Ivatts' class who delivered our Gifts for Kids poster!

Hat Day!

Lots of fun was had on Friday as we had our very first hat day! We took the opportunity to read The Magic Hat by Mem Fox and even designed our own magic hats!

Curriculum Update:

Into Reading

Last week we continued Module 3 in our Into Reading curriculum, and worked hard to answer the question: "What makes a community?". The books A Bucket of Blessings by Kabir Sehgal and Bo and Peter by Besty Franco helped us deepen our understanding of what a community is, and why communities are important. We also practiced how to retell a story, as well as identify the theme of a given text.

We also explored the concept of a sentence and practiced sorting letters, words, and sentences during one of our whole group lessons.

Fundations

Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters l, h and k. We also practiced reading the sight word "have'. The color of the week was white!

To make our letter/sound warm up a bit more engaging, we did it Headbands style! The class provided the sound, and I had to guess the letter and picture. We also enjoyed sorting pictures that started with the letter of the week!

Math

Last week the class was introduced to the concept of subtraction! We learned that subtracting means to "take away" and we can write subtraction number sentences (or equations) with the - and = symbols.

The students enjoyed using Boom Cards on the Touchview to practice their subtracting skills!

Writer's Workshop

Our writing has grown leaps and bounds in the past few weeks and I couldn't be more impressed with the children's progress! We have been stretching out our words to write labels with even more sounds, and last week, used sight words to begin to write full sentences. It sure is an exciting time in Room 115 for writing!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me last week for Parent/Teacher Conferences. I enjoyed getting to speak with so many families about the transition to K, and all of the wonderful things your children have accomplished during our first few months together! Although formal conferences are not available again until the spring, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns you have about your child's progress. Thank you!

Happy Birthday Teddy Bears!

Celebrating the 122nd birthday of the teddy bear was a highlight of our week! In addition to completing many teddy themed activities, we also enjoying reading the books Padington and Corduroy.

Curriculum Update:

Into Reading

Last week we continued Module 3 in our Into Reading curriculum, and worked hard to answer the question: "What makes a community?". The books Quinito's Neighborhood by Ina Cumpiano and The Alphabet from the Sky by Benedict Gross and Joey Lee helped us deepen our understanding of what a community is, and why communities are important. We also continue to identify the story elements of character, setting, and events as we read, and practiced the print concept of one-to-one correspondence.

Fundations

Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters p and j. We also practiced reading the sight words "had" and "did". The color of the week was brown!

Memory match continues to be a fun way for us to practice our Fundations letters and sounds. On Thursday we played using the Touchview!

Math

In math the class worked on early addition skills last week! We learned that adding means putting groups together, and the children were also introduced to the + and = symbols, and the term "equation" which is also known as a number sentence. In the week ahead we will begin to explore the concept of subtraction!

5th Grade Buddies

On Friday we had our first meeting with our fifth grade buddies! The students in Mrs. Janke's class helped us celebrate the teddy bear's birthday, and write about the foods we would bring on a teddy bear picnic. We will continue to see our buddies on every half day of school for the rest of the school year!

A friendly reminder that parent/teacher conferences begin this week. Please be sure to let me know if you are no longer able to make your appointment time. I am more than happy to reschedule! 

Turkey in Disguise

On Friday your child brought home a fun family project, to disguise a Thanksgiving turkey! Please work together to make your child's turkey NOT look like a turkey (some great ideas were provided in the notice). Your child should return their decorated turkey to school by Friday, November 15th. Thank you! 🦃

Curriculum Update:

Into Reading

Last week we began Module 3 in our Into Reading curriculum! The theme of this unit is My Community Heroes, and last week we worked hard to answer the question: "What makes a community?". The books Places in my Community by Bobbie Kalman and Map My Neighborhood by Jennifer Boothroyd both helped us deepen our understanding of what a community is and why communities are important. Through our lessons we also revisited the genre of informational text, and identified the topic, central idea, and key details of a given stories.

Fundations

Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters e and r. We also practiced reading the sight words "at" and "up". 

The mystery bag was back as the students practiced sorting objects that began with the letter of the week R, and review letters D and S. 

Math

In math last week the last began to explore the concept of "one more" and "one less". Mastering this concept will prepare the children to begin learning about addition and subtraction in the upcoming weeks. 

The students above practice identifying the number that is "one more" while playing a fun roll and cover game.

Writer's Workshop

The labeling fun continues in Writer's Workshop! Last week the students practiced drawing and labeling an apartment building. This lesson went nicely with our Into Reading curriculum as we learned that apartment buildings are a part of our community!

Election Day!

 Happy Election Day! We had a great time voting in our own election yesterday after reading the book Duck for President by Doreen Cronin. After all the ballots were counted, it was determined that duck was the winner. What an exciting day in Room 115! 😊

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences are right around the corner, and will begin on the evening of Tuesday, November 12th. Please click here to schedule your appointment with me! It is important to note that our meeting will only be 10 short minutes, and due to the number of parents I will be meeting with, things tend to run behind. If you would prefer to meet on a different day either before or after school please don't hesitate to reach out. I am more than happy to accommodate you!

Curriculum Update:

Pumpkin Fun!

Thursday was a spectacular time for science and math as we participated in some pumpkin fun! We began our exploration by learning about the parts of a pumpkin and the pumpkin life cycle. All of this learning culminated in an exciting activity that involved opening and exploring a real pumpkin!

Seed counting was another exciting (and gooey!) part of our pumpkin exploration. We were shocked to learn that our pumpkin had 392 seeds! That's A LOT of seeds!

Into Reading

Last week we completed Module 2 in our Into Reading program as we read the books Tiny Rabbits Big Wish and My Friends as we continued to answer the question: What makes each of us special? We also continued to review synonyms and antonyms, and identified the problem and solution in the stories we read.

Fundations

Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters d and s. We also practiced reading the sight words "if" and "on". Our color of the week was black!

Writing

We continue to practice labeling during Writer's Workshop! Last week the class had a great time labeling the classroom, and ME!
