Welcome Spring!
We had a great time celebrating the start of spring on Tuesday! To kick off the start of the new season, we read the story When Spring Comes by Kevin Henkes, and wrote about our favorite spring activities!

Our hallway bulletin board now features some super spring writing. 💮

Rock Your Socks!
Last came to an awesome end as we recognized Down Syndrome Awareness Day on Thursday. Thanks so much to all those who participated and rocked their fun/crazy socks!

Star Student ⭐
Congratulations to Quinn who was our Star Student last week! We look forward to learning about, and celebrating another friend from our class in the week ahead!

Classroom Celebrity!
Did you know we have a celebrity in our classroom? Please enjoy this Play-doh commercial which features our friend Savanna! Click here to watch!

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations we learned the sight words do and does. The class was also introduced to digraphs, or two letters that make one brand new sound. In Kindergarten we will practice reading and writing words with the sh, ch, th, wh, and ck digraphs.

Math
In math we reviewed our teen numbers last week! The children were reminded that teen means "ten" and that teen numbers contain one group of ten, and in the case of 11-19, some extras. I am so proud of the progress I have seen with everyone's teen number recognition and writing skills since this concept was first introduced many weeks ago. Keep up the great work!

The students above work together to sequence the teen numbers on their double ten frame cards.

Writer's Workshop
We continue to work on our procedural, or "how to" writing in Writer's Workshop. Last week the class sequenced and wrote the steps for how to make a donut. The students also enjoyed verbally walking me through the steps for brushing my teeth!

Fifth Grade Buddies
On Friday, we enjoyed seeing our fifth grade buddies for the second time this month! In honor of World Water Day, the fifth grade students taught us about the importance of water, and all they had learned during a recent unit on the watershed. They then helped the Kindergarten students brainstorm ways to conserve water and worked together to create a special water project. 🚰

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K! 🍎📖🚌

Special Assembly
A BIG Boyden thank you to the Harney Academy of Irish Dance for putting on a wonderful assembly for us last week. It was amazing to see all of the hard work the dancers put in, and was also a great way to get into the spirit of St. Patrick's Day! 🍀

It was so exciting to see some familiar Boyden faces perform!

Star Student ⭐
Congratulations to Jayce who was our Star Student last week! We look forward to learning about, and celebrating another friend from our class in the week ahead!

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Thank you so much to all of the parents who met with me for spring conferences over the last two weeks. I really enjoyed chatting with each one of you! While there are no more formal conferences held this year, please never hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions or concerns about your child's progress in class. I am always more than happy to speak with you!

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations we learned the sight words see and she. We also practiced reading and writing words in the -et word family!

Working hard on our sight word and CVC word reading skills during table rotations!

Math
In math we completed our unit on 3D solids shapes last week! The students enjoyed learning how to draw cones, cubes, spheres, and cylinders and also played a fun game of bingo to reinforce their ability to name, identify and decribe 3D solid figures. In the week ahead we will learn about the different number combinations that make 10!

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop we continue to work on our How To pieces. Last week the students wrote out the steps for making and peanut butter and jelly sandwich and on Friday, started sequencing the steps for how to make a donut! Yum!

Media/Stem
The Kindergarten students were busy last week as they completed their Cube Keepers and put them to the test! After reading the book The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, pairs of students were tasked with engineering a comtraption that would keep an ice cube from melting (similiar to the snowball in the story). Unfortunately all of the ice cubes didn't last long, but the children sure had fun trying to keep them frozen!

March "Math"ness! 🐧
Last week was the kick-off of Boyden's ST Math incentive known as March Mathness! Each week classes will be matched up to compete against each other. The class who completes the most ST Math puzzles will move onto the next round. On Friday we enjoyed getting together with our 5th grade buddies from Mrs. Janke's class to work on ST Math together! The K students had a fun time explaining their puzzles to their buddies, and the 5th grade students were great at helping out if/when we got stuck.

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations we learned the sight words we and he. We also continued to practice tapping and/or sliding CVC words such as hat, mug, and pot, and  built CVC words using magnetic letters. The class also learned a rule for when to use the letter C or K when writing words. The rhyme "K takes i and e, C takes the other three" (vowels a, e, o) helped us remember this new concept. The students below practiced writing the word "kit" and knew it started with the letter K due to the short i sound.

Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop we continue to boost our reading super powers as we look more closely at the pictures in the books that we read, and use clues in the images to build greater meaning and understanding.  It is important to remember that these concepts are being taught to build comprehension of the stories we are reading, NOT as a word reading/decoding strategy.

Last week we practiced the skill of visualizing, or making pictures/movies in our mind! The class listened carefully to a short story I read aloud, then drew what they imagined. We enjoyed taking a gallery walk and looking at everyone's pictures, and noticed how friends "saw" the characters and setting differently in their minds.

Math
In math we continue to review geometry concepts and explored our 3D shapes, also known as solids! We named, described, and identfied cones, cubes, and cylinders last week, and also compared circles (2D) to spheres (3D).

On Friday we enjoyed using the Touch View to find 3D solid shapes.

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop our "how to" unit was in full swing last week! While our lessons on Monday and Tuesday focused on whole group and shared writing, by Wednesday the class was ready to put what we've been learning into practice. We discussed the steps to making a pb&j sandwich, then numbered and used transition words to label each step. 🥜🍇

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K! 🍎📖🚌
