Announcements

Q and U Wedding
I'm excited to announce that we will be having a wedding for the letters Q and U this Wednesday, December 20th (click here for all the details!). If possible, please have your child bring a wrapped/packaged item (or picture of an item) that begins with the letter Q and/or U (q-tips, quilt, quarter, unicorn, umbrella, etc.) for the wedding shower. I realize it's short notice, so I will have plenty of gifts available in the classroom as well. Students are also welcome to dress up for the occasion if they would like to!

Quiet Time Towels
Quiet Time towels were sent home on Friday for washing. Quiet Time towels do not need to be returned to school until after the winter break.

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters qu. and z. They also practiced reading the sight word "from". In the upcoming week we will review all of the sight words that have been taught so far this year, and prepare for the Q and U wedding!

On Friday the class enjoyed making zoo projects out of the letter Z! We kicked off this activity by reading Put Me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire.

Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop we continue to develop our concepts of print and early reading skills! Last week we reviewed our sight words and discussed the importance of recognizing them quickly or in a "snap". We then looked through our decodable readers and wrote down all of the sight/snap words we found.

Math
It was a busy week in math as the students continued to practice their addition and subtraction skills as well as identify the different number combinations that make 5!

We started our week off strong with five and ten frame bingo!

We also learned to play a new game which helps us practice the different number combinations that make 5.

One of our Work Stations (centers) last week had the students writing addition equations using snowballs (aka cotton balls! 😂)

On Friday we practiced putting the numbers 0-10 in order using our ten frame cards.

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K! 🍎🚌📖

A Peek At Our Week!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! It was another busy week in Room 115. Please enjoy a few updates below. 😊

Announcements:

Gifts for Kids
All donations for the Gift for Kids program are due this Monday, December 11th. Thank you so much for your incredibly generous donations. They are sure to make our sponsored child's holiday merry and bright!

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations the children learned about the letters x. and y. They also practiced reading the sight word "like". We have now learned all of the color words, and last week took the time to make a class book about our favorite colors (pictures to follow!). We also enjoyed singing some of our favorite color songs. Click this link to hear our red song!

After reading the book, What Does the X-Ray Say? the class enjoyed making their own x-ray art projects!

Math
Last week the class continued to practice their addition equations, and learned about a fun adding friend names Gus the Plus! At the end of the week we began to explore the concept of subtraction, and wrote equations with the - and = signs. We were also introduced to the character Linus the Minus who can often be found taking things away!

Work Stations continue to be a fun and busy time in our classroom, and provide the children with the opportunity to practice previously taught skills such as number writing, patterns, sorting, and shape recognition!

Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop we continue to develop our early reading skills and concepts of print through our Shared Reading unit. Last week the class practiced their finger pointing, and were also introduced to the concept of pre-reading or taking a "sneak peak" at a book before reading the words. At the end of the week we learned that patterns in books made for early readers can help us to "read" the story while we are still developing our word recognition skills.

Mrs. Carroll Visits!
Mrs. Carroll came back to Room 115 last week for her next technology lesson! During her visit she taught the students about the importance of managing screentime. The class was incredibly attentive and did a wonderful job participating in the lesson!

Fifth Grade Buddies
On Friday we welcomed Ms. Janke and her fifth grade class to Room 115! Every half day until the end of the school year we will be working with Ms. Janke's class and her fifth grade buddies as we read, write, and work together! This is a wonderful opportunity for Boyden's youngest and oldest students to collaborate and we couldn't be more excited to see them again soon!

During Friday's visit we got to meet our new buddies! We enjoyed listening to them read us each a story, and the Kindergarten students even returned the favor by reading some of the books we've been practicing to them!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K! 🍎🚌📖
