I hope everyone had a wondeful weeekend! It was another busy week in Room 202, and unfortunately I didn't take as many pictures as I would have liked. Please enjoy the few that I did snap!

Important Dates:

March 21st
World Down Syndrome Day
Rock your silly and/or mismatched socks!

Announcements:

A BIG Boyden thank you to the Harney Academy of Irish Dance for putting on a wonderful assembly for us last week. It was amazing to see all of the hard work the dancers put in, and was also a great way to get into the spirit of St. Patrick's Day!

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Thank you so much to all of the parents who met with me for spring conferences last week. I really enjoyed chatting with each one of you! While there are no more formal conferences held this year, please never hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions or concerns about your child's progress in class. I am always more than happy to speak with you!

Markers Needed
Unfortunately we have gone through our jumbo box of class markers. If a handful of families wouldn't mind donation a box or two to our classroom that should get us to the end of the year. Nothing fancy! A box of 10, classic broad line markers will be perfect! Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Curriculum Update:

This Week's Sight Words: see, she

Reader's Workshop
Last week in Reader's Workshop we continued to strengthen our reading muscles as we used our letter-sound knowledge to help us read words. We also learned about begining blends or clusters in words like cloud, tree, and grass!

The reading partners above work hard to apply their letter-sound knowledge to alphabet books that Mrs. Miles brought to share with us!

Fundations
Last week in Fundtions we completed Unit 3! During this unit we continued to practice reading both real and nonsense CVC words. If you feel like your child could use a little more practice with their tapping skills, have them try this fun game on Starfall.com!

Math
In math we continued to learn about composing and decomposing numbers! Our main focus last week was finding ways to make ten, also known as "friends of ten". Try asking your child how many ways there are to make the number 10. We learned a cool trick for determining how many ways a number can be made in class!

The students above practice their decomposing skills using counters.

Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop we continue to work on our "How To" pieces! I am SO impressed with the awesome effort the class has been putting into their work, and the wonderful ideas they have for their how tos! Some topics have included: How to throw a party, How to cook a hot dog (camping style), and how to do a handstand. I look forward to supporting the children as they continue to work on their How To writing again this week.

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!

Welcome Mrs. Dacko!
I am thrilled to share that longtime Boyden Educational Support Professional, Mrs. Raquel Dacko, joined the Room 202 family last week! I had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Dacko for many years prior to the pandemic, and I couldn't be happier that she has resumed her role as a Kindergarten assistant. We are fortunate to have Mrs. Dacko in our classroom for three full mornings a week, and for another large chunk of time on the other two days. Welcome back Mrs. Dacko!!

Library Tomorrow!
A friendly reminder that our class visits the library/media center on Mondays. Please have your child return their book so that they are able to select a new one. Please also return your child's clean quiet time towel as well. Thanks so much for all of your help! :)

This week's sight words: be, me

Read Across America!
Last week we celebrated Read Across America week by learning about a new author each day! The students enjoyed reading some of their most famous (and not so famous) books and completing learning activities that corresponded with each text. On Monday we learned about Eric Litwin and James Dean who are best known for writing the Pete the Cat books. On Tuesday we enjoyed books by Mo Willems who is the author of the Piggy and Elephant books! The timing couldn't have been more perfect as Tuesday was National Pig Day!

Last week in math we started a unit on composing and decomposing numbers! The friends from blue table show how they decomposed, or showed different ways to make the number 5, using the characters from the story There's a Bird on my Head! by Mo Willems.

On Wednesday we read books by Laura Numeroff who is the author of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie!

The students above show off their writing done in Laura Numeroff style!

Thursday's spotlight author was Christian Robinson who wrote the book You Matter! The students practiced their writing skills by sharing things that matter to them. We also created a fun picture craft that reinforced the message that everyone matters! Be on the lookout for pictures of this fun activity in an upcoming blog post!

On Friday we read books by Eric Carle! The students enjoyed hearing the familiar story The Very Busy Spider, then creating their own busy spider mini book! We also practiced decomposing the numbers 5 and 6 as we completed a duck themed activity after listening to the book 10 Rubber Ducks.

The highlight of our week was Storybook Character Dress Up day on Friday! The students had a great time strutting their stuff on our red carpet yet again as we had our 2nd annual storybook character fashion show. Thank you so much for all of your help and support with this special theme day. It was truly a memorable one!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!
