A Peek At Our Week!

I hope everyone is making the best of this cold and dreary long weekend. Please enjoy a few updates from our very busy classroom!

Important Dates:

June 17th:
Last Day of School for Students

Curriculum Update:

Last Week's Sight Words: or, for
This Week's Sight Words: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, black, brown (color words)

Math
Last week in math we completed our unit on measurement! While we had learned about height, length, and capacity in previous weeks, the end of our unit focused primarily on weight. The class enjoyed exploring this concept using balance scales to compare the weight of various objects in the classroom. This week in math we will begin working extensively on our math facts and building our fluency with our facts to 5. Please be sure to have your child review the flashcards that were sent home last week. We will be starting our addition "boot camp" tomorrow! :)

Fundations
In Fundations last week we began Unit 5 in our curriculum. This unit focuses heavily on sentence reading, writing, structure and is a great way to help the students sharpen their sentence writing skills before heading to first grade! In addition to our work with sentences, we continue to review the sounds of the digraphs sh, th, ch, wh, and ck.

Writer's Workshop
The children have been working extremely hard to complete our class "All About" book which focuses on ice cream! Different sections, or chapters, of our book include: What is ice cream? What are the flavors of ice cream? Where do you get ice cream? and How is ice cream made? We are hoping to complete and assemble our book by the end of the week!

ABC Countdown to Summer!
Our ABC Countdown to summer will continue this week! Please be sure to check the calendar I sent home for each day's theme! Pictures from last week's days are featured below!

Insect Day!
Insect day was a HUGE hit! We had a great time learning about the characteristics of insects and even went on a bug hunt!

Joke Day!
Lots of laughs were had on joke day! Please be sure to check your child's Seesaw account to enjoy a special joke they recorded for you!

The class had a great time making special projects to showcase their jokes!

Kite Day!

Luau Day!
Room 202 was transformed into a tropical oasis for luau day! We kept the warm beachy vibes going by watching Moana on Friday for movie day!

Making paper bag pineapples was a highlight of our day! This fun project was a great addition to some "sweet" writing we completed.

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed today's summer-like weather! It's hard to believe that we are entering our last full week of May! A friendly reminder that we will be continuing with our ABC Countdown to Summer this week. Please be sure to check the calendar I sent home for each day's activities!

Important Dates:

May 31st:
Memorial Day
No School

Math
Last week in math we continued our unit on measurement! We learned that capacity is how much a container can hold, and that weight is how heavy or light an object is. We had a great time experimenting with different objects and balance scales, and look forward to continuing our exploration in the week ahead!

Reading (and Writing too!)
Reading and writing came together last week as we completed many "craftivities" which incorporated our ABC countdown to summer! After reading I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen the children described their own perfect hat! This was a great connection to the letter H and hat day!

F is for Friendship!
On Wednesday we celebrated the letter F and had Friendship Day! We read the book Peanut Butter & Cupcake by Terry Border and learned that even the most unlikely pair can be great friends! The class then did a beautiful job drawing and writing about one of their friends and how they are the same and different.

Friendship Day was also the perfect time to head outside and make some friendship bracelets!

G is For Game Day!
Game Day was also a great success! Thank you to all of the families that sent in games for the class to enjoy. We had an absolute blast!

E is for Exercise!
We couldn't have asked for better weather to celebrate the letter E with an exercise day! The students had SO much fun completing various exercise stations outside.

Science
It was a bittersweet time in Room 202 last week as we said good-bye to our butterfly friends. Our five painted lady butterflies were released and are now flying free and enjoying life in the outside world. While we miss them already, we are so thankful to have had the opportunity to watch them grow and change!
