A Peek At Our Week!

Sunday, February 23, 2020 No comments
I hope your child had a wonderful February vacation! With all of the hard work that has been happening in Room 202, the break was much deserved! I am looking forward to hearing all about the fun that was had when we return to school on February 24th (tomorrow!)

Announcements

Jump-a-Thon!
Congratulations to Tessa and Molly who were our class representatives in the Jump-a-Thon which took place the Friday before vacation! We are SO proud their tremendous effort. Great work Tessa and Molly! Also, a BIG congratulations to Mrs. Dacko who was the last jumper jumping in the teacher's competition. Way to go Mrs. Dacko!

Valentine's Day
Our class had a great time spreading some love as we celebrated Valentine's Day! Passing out our valentines was definitely a highlight of the day!

Curriculum Update

Literacy
Before vacation we continued "tapping out" sounds to read consonant, vowel, consonant (CVC) words such as cat, pot, and map! We also practiced reading the sight words are, that, and do.

Playing bingo with letter tiles was a great way to review our sounds before the break!

Math
Valentine's Day themed math centers were a great way for the children to practice a wide variety of skills including addition, subtraction, and number recognition! Two teacher-led tables also provided the children with practice decomposing (i.e. showing different ways) to make numbers!

The students above are using pink and red hearts to show the different ways to make five. We discovered that 0 and 5, 1 and 4, and 2 and 3 are all equal  to 5. We also discussed that you can flip these combinations to show even more ways!

Writing
It was a bittersweet time in writing as we completed our "How To" unit prior to vacation. This was a particularly enjoyable unit for the children as they LOVED writing about different things they know how to do. Some topics included how to build with Legos, make an ice cream sundae, draw a bunny, and get ready for school in the  morning! We capped off this series of lessons with a writer's celebration in which the students had the opportunity to read one of their published pieces to a second grade student in Mrs. Arnold's classroom! We had an awesome time sharing our work with Mrs. Arnold's friends and also hearing the creative How To pieces they had completed.

Thanks so much for stopping by to take a peek at our week! I hope your child enjoys these last few hours of vacation! :)

Curriculum Update

Literacy
Last week we read the story Hide Clyde! by Russell Benfanti and discussed the question, "How do chameleons change?". The students were introduced to the sight words are, that, and do and we also completed Unit 2 in Fundations which focused on writing uppercase letters.

The students used watercolor paints to create their own colorful chameleons at the Creation Station! Watercolors were then used as a fun way to practice our sight words.
Math
It was an exciting time for math in Room 202 last week as we celebrated the 100th day of school! The class enjoyed participating in 100th day math centers which had them counting, reading, and writing numbers from 1 to 100!

Happy 100th Day!
Innovation Lab
A BIG "thank you" to Mrs. Carroll and Mrs. Moses who helped us in the Innovation Lab last week as we completed technology centers for the first time! The very exciting stations included two Bee Bot activities, iPads, and Osmos! The class had a blast practicing their letters sounds and reading CVC words!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!

Hip Hip Hooray for the 100th Day!
A friendly reminder that this Thursday, February 6th is the 100th day of school! Please have your child bring in their bag of 100 items on this day (your child came home with information about this last week). I am looking forward to having the class share their creative collections on Thursday!

Valentine's Day!
We will be celebrating Valentine's Day in our classroom on February 14th! Information for children who wish to participate will be sent home at the beginning of the week.

Progress Reports
On Wednesday, February 5th you will be able to access your child's Term 1 progress report/report card using the Apsen/X2 student information system. It is important to review your child’s progress report with them, and to celebrate all that they have accomplished this term! It is also a great time to discuss areas of focus or improvement. When viewing your child’s progress report, it is important to remember that the skills shown on the report are what we expect our students to master by the end of kindergarten. Being that it is only the first term, it is completely appropriate for students that are doing well to earn scores of "not yet" (N) or "partially" (P), as they are working towards mastering each standard by the end of the year. Please keep in mind that we have not yet covered some standards in our curriculum (as is the case with many of our science and social studies standards). As a result, your child was not assessed on their mastery of these skills this term. After reviewing your child’s progress report, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions that you may have. I am SO proud of each child for working very hard this term, and look forward to supporting their continued success in our second term together!

Curriculum:

Literacy
Last week in literacy the children continued to practice reading the sight words of, you, and they. In Fundations we reviewed the formation of uppercase letters M-X and worked hard to tap even more CVC words!

The class enjoyed doing some sight word stamping during center time last week!
Math
It was an exciting time in math last week as our class began to explore number lines! We learned about and labeled the different parts of our class number line which included the arrows, tick marks, and numbers.

The number line Write the Room activity pictured above provided the students with the fun challenge of finding the missing numbers on several different number lines (some of which went all the way up to 120!)
Social Studies
In Social Studies we learned all about Chinese New Year! We discovered that 2020 is the year of the rat and that, in the Chinese culture,  rats are believed to be a cheerful and outgoing animals that brings lots of wealth! We also learned that dragons and fish are common symbols of Chinese New Year and that this very special holiday is often celebrated with delicious meals and parades!

We enjoyed making paper lanterns to celebrate the Chinese, or Lunar New Year!

Mrs. Tilton Visits!
We were happy to welcome Mrs. Tilton into our classroom on Thursday as she provided a wonderful lesson on how to best use the calming corner/chill out chair in our classroom. The students even enjoyed a helpful "how to" video created by some of Boyden's third grade students! Click Here to View the Video at Home!

During Mrs. Tilton's lesson each child had the opportunity to practice using the Chill our Chair and the calming tools that accompany it.

The Chill out Chair isn't just for the students. Teachers can use it too!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that in new in Room 202!
