A Peek At Our Week!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! I am looking forward to another busy and exciting week ahead in Room 202!

Curriculum Update

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the book Farfallina and Marcel by Holly Keller and discussed the question, "How do animals change as they grow?". We also learned about the letter "D" and continued to review the sight words me, see, and look.

The children had a great time making "dotted dogs" as we practiced the letter D!

Math
Subtraction has been our major focus in math and the children are doing a fantastic job developing their understanding of this sometimes tricky concept! Last week we continued to practice solving subtraction number sentences that included the minus and equals signs. We also learned that you can cross off objects in a picture to show "taking away".

White boards made writing our subtraction number sentences even more fun and engaging!

Last week also kicked off the beginning of Word Problem Wednesday! From now until the end of the school year, the students will practice solving both addition and subtraction word problems on Wednesdays during math!

Reading Buddies
What better way to end a busy week then to enjoy a book with our Reading Buddies! Reading Buddy time has become a fast favorite on Friday afternoons. We love reading with our second grade friends from Mrs. Davis's class!

Thanks so much for stopping by to learn about all that is new in Room 202! Have a great week!

Sight Word Homework
On Friday afternoon your child came home with a sight word homework packet. Please have your student use the flashcards included to review our Kindergarten sight words and build automaticity when reading them. Sight word flashcards can be kept at home and do not need to be returned to school. Thank you in advance for your help and support!

Curriuclum

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the book See How We Grow by Katacha Diaz and discussed the question, "How do children change as they grow?". We also learned about the letter "K" and were introduced to the new sight words me, see, and look.

Math
For the past few weeks we have been learning about addition and subtraction in class! We have been working hard to build the understanding that addition is when you join two groups together, and subtraction is when you separate a group and take something away. We will continue practicing our addition and subtraction skills this week as we become more familiar with the +, -, and = signs.

The students above practice adding by making their own cube towers and then joining them with a friend's!

Science Fun!
Last week's snowy weather made for great science conversations. After reading The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, we decided to have our own fun with snow! Like Peter in the story, we brought our own snowballs inside. While we all agreed that our snowballs would melt in our warm classroom, we took our exploration a step further by making snowballs that were two different size (small and large). We predicted that the smaller snowball would melt faster and we were right!

What better way to end our week then by showing some Patriots pride! GO PATS!!
