Last week sure was a busy one in Room 202! I hope you enjoy reading about all of the fun and excitement we had!
Important Dates:

December 25th-January 2nd:
Winter Break
No School

Curriculum Update:

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the story Whose Garden Is It? by Mary Ann Hoberman. While reading this fantasy tale we answered the question, "Who lives in a garden?". We also continued to review the sight words "for" and "he" and learned all about the letter N!

Our story of the week made for a great conversation starter about gardens and the types of plants we can find in them! It's always fun when reading and science come together!

Writing about what the children would plant in their own gardens was also a highlight of our week! This particular assignment was especially fun since some students decided to create fantasy gardens that grew candy and toys!

Math
Last week in math we continued our exploration of teen numbers! We learned that the number 15 is made up of one group of ten and then five more, and the number 16 is made up of one group of ten and then six more! This week we will take a closer look at the numbers 17 and 18!

The class had a blast learning a new game called "I have, who has?" It provided us with the perfect opportunity to practice our teen numbers!

Holiday Cards
Have you been to Dedham Savings Bank lately? If so, you may have seen some of the finalists in their annual holiday card contest! Congratulations to all of the students who were selected. We look forward to hearing the winners be announced this week!

Curriculum

Literacy
We continued to talk about hibernation last week as we read the nonfiction text A Bed for the Winter by Karen Wallace. The children enjoyed the real photographs in this book and continued to build background knowledge about animals that hibernate. We also were introduced to the sight words he and for, and focused on the letter "i".

We had a great time designing our own igloos for "i" week!

Math
In math we began a unit on teen numbers! We learned that a teen number must start with the number one and also must have one group of ten and then "some more". We discovered that the number 12 is one group of ten and two more, and that 13 is one group of ten and three more! This week we will take a closer look at the numbers 14, 15, 16, and 17!

In addition to learning about teen numbers, we also reviewed number order concepts. The children had a great time applying their ordering skills while also learning about number lines!

Bee-Bots
A BIG '"thank you" to Boyden's Technology Specialist, Mrs. Carroll, who took time to visit our classroom last week! Mrs. Carroll and her fifth grade "Techsperts" did a fantastic lesson on Bee-Bots! Bee-Bots are a child friendly way of introducing "coding" and are also fantastic for teaching directionality, sequencing, estimation, and problem solving skills. The class had a fantastic time creating the 'code' to get our Bee-Bots from one place on their mat to another, and Mr. Dearborn and I also had a blast getting in on the action! For more information on Bee-Bots click here!

I hope you enjoyed taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in Room 202!

Curriculum Update:

Fire Safety!
Before Thanksgiving we were excited to welcome Firefighter Pete and Firefighter Donovan to Boyden! They taught us some VERY important information about fire safety, including what to do if your clothing is on fire, as well as the number you should call in case of an emergency. The kindergarten classes really enjoyed their visit!

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the story Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. This funny fantasy story about a hibernating bear was a great catalyst for learning real facts and information about animals that hibernate!

Last week in Literacy was also learned about the letter "c" and continued to practice the sight words we, my, and like.

Math
In math we continued our exploration of numbers to ten and extended our understanding by practicing our sequencing skills. We had a great time applying our new learning of this concept as we created our very own number giraffes!

Paper Chain Project!
Our class also had a blast completing our paper chain project! Not only will the chains help us count down the days until Christmas/Winter Break, but it also encouraged us to practice important math skills such as counting and creating patterns!

I hope everyone enjoyed taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to see all that is new in  Room 202!
