I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! It's hard to believe tomorrow is the first day of May and that we are entering our last full month of school together! Boy has this year flown!!!

Announcements:

Library Day
For the next two weeks our class will continue to visit the library on Tuesdays. This change is due to MCAS testing in the older grades which has resulted in shifts to our schedule. I will do my best to send a friendly reminder about this change on Monday evening!

Field Trip
Thank you SO much to all of the parents who volunteered to chaperone our upcoming field trip to see 'Pete the Cat'. The interest in joining us was overwhelming and I wish I was able to bring more parents along! If you were not chosen from the lottery this time, be on the lookout for information regarding another trip that will be coming up soon!

Curriculum:

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the book Mayday! Mayday! by Chris L. Demarest. This non-fiction text showed how the Coast Guard uses aircraft and highly trained personnel to respond to emergency situations. We also learned about the letter "X" and continued to review the color words yellow, green, and blue which were introduced before vacation.

The children has a great time creating their own x-ray art work as we learned about the letter "X"!

We also read the story Not a Box by Antoinette Portis and had a blast turning a boring box into an extraordinary creation!

Math
We completed Topic 11 in math last week which had us working with the numbers 17, 18, and 19. We also revisited the concept of "number bonds" which are a great tool for showing the different ways to decompose (or make) a number!

This number bonds activity incorporated one of greatest highlights of our week. BUBBLES!

Bubbles!
Last week we enjoyed a fantastic "in house" field trip as Mrs. Harris from the Discovery Museum in Acton came to teach us about bubbles! The children had a wonderful time experimenting with the science behind making bubbles! Thank you Mrs. Harris!!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful April vacation! I am SO excited to head back to Boyden tomorrow and hear about all of the fun that was had!

Announcements:

Quiet Time Towels/Blankets
Please have your child bring a clean towel/blanket to school for quiet time (quiet time items were sent home for washing before vacation). Thanks so much for your help!

April Assembly!
The children did a fantastic job performing "Tony Chestnut" at April's school wide assembly! Please click the link below to view a video of our performance (While the video was uploaded using You Tube, it is set as "private" and can only be viewed by clicking the link). For parents who were hoping to see our song live, the kindergarten students will have a repeat performance of this Boyden favorite at our spring music concert next month!

Spring Crafts
A BIG thank you to our Room Parents Mrs. Shaughnessy and Mrs. Seeley for organizing yet another fabulous craft celebration! The children had a great time participating in fantastic spring/Easter themed crafts and games, and it was a great way to celebrate the start of spring and April vacation! Also, many thanks to Mrs. Cotter, Mrs. Mehrmanesh, Mrs. Saleeba, and Mr. Seeley who were able to join us and provide wonderful activities!

Sight Word Practice
I am SO incredibly proud of how hard the children have been working to learn their sight words. Thank you so much for all of the time that has been put in at home to make this wonderful progress possible! A friendly reminder to please return your child's sight word checklist to school each Friday. Students who demonstrate mastery with the kindergarten sight word list will be given a challenge activity!

April Vacation
Please note that April vacation will begin this Friday, April 14th with classes resuming on Monday, April 24th. I hope everyone has a fantastic April break! Fingers crossed for some beautiful spring weather!

Curriculum Update

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the story Abuela by Arthur Dorros and discussed the question "Where will our adventures take us?" We also learned about the letter "W" and practiced the sight words here, go, and from!

We had a great time reading Where the Wild Thing Are as a part of "W" week! After reading the story the children did a fantastic job designing their own "wild thing" monsters and writing about a time when they felt wild!

Math
In math we have been revisiting teen numbers! As part of this unit your child has been using tens and ones as well as ten frames to both create and decompose numbers 11 to 19!

We had a great time playing with our place value manipulatives before using them to show teen numbers.

Thanks so much for stopping by to take a peek at our week! I hope everyone enjoys what looks to be a beautiful week ahead!
