A Peek At Our Week!

Sunday, September 24, 2023 No comments

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend despite the dreary weather! Please see below for a few highlights from our classroom last week. 😊

Announcements:

Quiet Time Towels
Quiet Time towels were sent home on Thursday for washing. Please have your child bring their clean towel back with them to school tomorrow (Monday). Thank you!

Nut Free Classroom
A friendly reminder that we are a nut free classroom. Please be sure not to pack foods that contains any nuts or nut products for snacktime. Since there is an allergy safe table in the cafeteria, nut/nut products are ok for lunch. Thank you so much for all of your help and diligence. It is greatly appreciated!

Curriculum Update:

Fundations
Last week in Fundations we learned about the letter t, b, and f. We also practiced the sight words "to" and "the". During the first few weeks of school we will be learning to read and spell color words as well! Last week's color was blue. Click here to listen to a song we used to help us practice this color.

Math
In math we began the first unit in our new Bridges curriculum! For our whole group lesson we practiced counting, sorting, and classifying shoes. The children then moved onto work stations where they got to explore math manipulatives such as unifix cubes, geoboards, pattern blocks, and polydrons.

During one of our whole group lessons we made a human graph and sorted our shoes by various  attributes including sneakers/not sneakers, laces/no laces, velcro/no velcro.

Writer's Workshop
Last week in Writer's Workshop we practiced a very important pre-writing skill, drawing! We learned that shapes such as circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles can be used to make pictures (and people too!).

Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop literacy and science came together last week as we read many poems and books about apples! We will continue our apple exploration this week as we also learn about Johnny Appleseed in preparation for his birthday on September 26th!

Special Guests
Last week we also welcomed many special guests into our classroom! On Monday, the Kindergarteners enjoyed a very special visit from Officer Hart and Rebel who taught us about school safety.

The children also enjoyed meeting Mrs. Carroll, Boyden's Digital Learning Coach! Mrs. Carroll taught us how to take care of our Chromebook computers and helped with the tricky process of logging in for the first time.

On Wednesday Mrs. Alden, one of Boyden's school counselors, came by for our first guidance/SEL lesson! She reviewed the Boyden behavior expectations and taught us about her job as a school counselor.

We ended the week with a visit from Mrs. Rinaldi, one of Walpole's amazing math coaches! She introduced us to JiJi the penguin and ST Math. The class was very excited to start solving puzzles and get moving on their own math journeys!

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K! 🍎📖🚌

A Peek At Our Week!

Sunday, September 17, 2023 No comments

The children settled into Room 115 nicely as we spent our first full week of school together! Last week we continued to practice classroom routines and also review expected behaviors.  I couldn't be more pleased with how quickly everyone is acclimating to Kindergarten life!

 Important Dates:

September 20th:
Open House/Curriculum Night
(Parents/Guardians Only)

September 22nd:
Half Day of School
12:25pm Dismissal

Announcements:

Boyden Folders
Please be sure to check your child's folder (nightly if possible) for important notices and information. Any class work or announcements should be removed and kept at home unless otherwise noted. Thanks so much for your help!

Bus Tags
The children have done a wonderful job remembering their dismissal routines over the past two weeks! Starting tomorrow they will no longer come home with their dismissal tag. Please return your child's lanyard to school so that it can be used for future field trips.

Lunch Forms
I will not be sending home a formal lunch slip this week as most children are very aware of which days they are buying/bringing their lunch. If you would like the peace of mind of having me know their plan for the week though you are more than welcome to email me. 😊

All About Our Names
On Friday your child should have brought home an orange card in their Boyden folder. This card gives your family the chance to share about your child's name and the origins behind it. Unfortunately a few cards fell out of the folders and were left behind in the classroom. If you would like your child to participate in this activity but they did not come with a card, please let me know. I'm more than happy to send along another one!

Curriculum Update:

Literacy
Lots of Literacy learning was happening in our classroom last week! We read the story The Little School Bus by Carol Roth which helped us answer the question, "How do children get to school?" We also began our Fundations program which taught us important practices such as how to hold our writing tools and have proper body posture, as well as how to "sky write" our letters. At the end of the week the students were introduced to the letter "T"!

After reading our school bus story we created a graph of the ways we go home!

Rhyming was another focus of my instruction last week, and the students enjoyed participating in both whole group and partner activities to help practice this skill! We also had a blast making our own Rhyming Dust Bunnies after ready the book with the same title by Jan Thomas.

We also read the stories Chrysanthemum and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! Both books provided us with the opportunity to discuss our own names, as well as the letters in them. 🌴

There's nothing better then a little Friday fun at recess! 🌞

Thanks so much for taking a peek at our week! Please check back soon to watch us learn, grow, and play in the wonderful world that is K! 🍎📘🚌

A Peek At Our Week!

Our school year is certainly off to a great start and it's hard to believe we've only been in school for 4 short days! This week the children learned all about our classroom, school, and the other students in our class! 🍎📖🚌

Important Dates:

September 20th:
Open House/Curriculum Night
(Parents/Guardians Only)

September 22nd:
Half Day of School
12:25pm Dismissal

Announcements:

Reminders:
Please be sure to send your child's dismissal tag, as well as their lunch form (orange) with them tomorrow. Lunch and dismissal can be a challenging time of day, so these two items are incredibly helpful. Thank you so much!

Our Busy Week:

Scavenger Hunt!
Last week the children put their knowledge of Room 115 to the test as they went on a classroom scavenger hunt! Finding the calendar, their cubby, and the classroom library were just a few of the stops on their list.

Classroom Rules
We spent a great deal of time last week talking about the rules and expectations for our classroom. After reading stories such as David Goes to School and Miss Nelson is Missing, we brainstormed our own set of rules for Room 115. We were able to consolidate our very lengthy list into three major behavior expectations: Be Kind, Be Safe, and Be Respectful! We learned that when we follow these three rules then we are able to have fun!

On Friday we had a great time playing a name game called Busy Buzzy Bee at morning meeting!

Where is the Gingerbread Man?
On Friday we went on a hunt for the Gingerbread Man who was loose in Boyden School! While we searched locations such as the office, cafeteria, and gym, it seems as though he was too fast for us to catch! Luckily our hunt had a happy ending as the Gingerbread Man left us a fun activity to complete when we returned to our classroom!

Our first few days in Kindergarten were a huge success! I'm looking forward to continuing our work together next week! :)
