Charlotte's Web Field Trip
A friendly reminder that our next field trip is coming up on Monday, March 5th! Since this trip is being generously sponsored by one of the Kindergarten grandparents, there is no fee due. Please sign and return your child's permission slip to school right after the break if you have not already done so. I will be selecting and notifying chaperones ASAP!

Jump-a-Thon!
Congratulations to Sam and Mairenne who were our class representatives in the Jump-a-Thon which took place on Friday! We are SO proud their tremendous effort. Great work Sam and Mairenne!

Hip Hip Hooray for the 100th Day!
There was LOTS of excitement in Room 202 as we celebrated the 100th Day of School before vacation! The children had a fantastic time completing many 100th Day activities which included counting to 100 by 1s, 2s, and 10s!

Valentine's Day
Our class had a great time spreading some love as we celebrated Valentine's Day! Passing out our valentines was definitely a highlight of the day!

Curriculum Update

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the story Hide Clyde! by Russell Benfanti and discussed the question, "How do chameleons change?". We continued to practice reading the sight words of, you, and they, and learned about the letter O!

Making a sight word octopus was one of the many highlights of "O" week!

The students above had fun using watercolor paints to create their own colorful chameleons!

Math
Last week in Math we went back to review the concept of addition. After reading the book Domino Addition by Lynette Long, the children had a great time using real dominoes to write their own addition number sentences!

Thanks so much for stopping by to take a peek at our week! I look forward to providing more updates when we return to school after February vacation!

Report Cards
Last week your child came home with their progress report for Term 1! It is important to review your child’s progress report, and to celebrate all that they have accomplished this term! When viewing your child’s progress report, it is important to remember that the skills shown on the report are what we expect our students to master by the end of kindergarten. Being that we are only halfway through the school year, it is completely appropriate for students that are doing well to earn scores of 'N' or 'P', as they are working towards mastering each standard by the end of the year. Please keep in mind that we have not yet covered some standards in our curriculum (as is the case with many of our science, social studies and math standards). As a result, your child was not assessed on their mastery of these skills in term one. After reviewing your child’s progress report, please sign and return their report card envelope to school. The progress report is yours to keep! I am SO proud of each child for working very hard this term, and look forward to supporting their continued success in our second term together!

Hip Hip Hooray for the 100th Day!
A friendly reminder that this Wednesday, February 7th is the 100th day of school! Please have your child bring in their bag of 100 items if they have not already done so. I am looking forward to having the class share their creative collections on Wednesday!

Valentine's Day!
On Friday your child came home with information about our upcoming Valentine exchange. In order to make things a little easier and more enjoyable this year, I am asking the children to simply sign their name to each of their Valentines and NOT to individually address them to each student in our class. A friendly reminder that no food or candy of any kind is allowed. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!

Groundhog Homework
I am SO proud of the children as they worked hard to complete their Groundhog homework assignment! We had a great time discussing Groundhog Day on Friday and learned many fun facts about our good friend Phil! (Did you know Groundhog day originated in Germany!?!)

Most friends predicted that the groundhog would see his shadow!

Curriculum Update

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we discussed the question, "What do seeds become?' as we read the book Seeds by Ken Robbins. We learned that fruits and vegetables grow from seeds, and that some of these tasty treats even have one big, hard seed called a pit! We were excited to try our own experiment by placing a pit from an avocado into a glass of water. We hope in the next few weeks an avocado plant will begin to sprout! Also last week we began practicing the new sight words of, you, and they and also learned all about the letter F!

We had a great time "fishing" for words that start with the letter 'F'!

Math
Last week in math we completed our unit on subtraction! The children continued to practice writing subtraction number sentences using the -, and = signs, and learned that we can show subtraction by crossing off items in a picture, or using manipulatives such as counters.

The student above extends their thinking by creating their own subtraction problem!

Writing
The Superbowl made for a great writing topic last week! The predictions are in, and 100% of our class think the Patriots will win!

Snowy Fun!
Monday's snowy weather was perfect for catching snowflakes! We had a great time looking at the shapes of the snowflakes we caught until they melted away.

Recess
The cold and wet weather has been keeping us inside for recess quite a bit in the recent weeks. A big THANK YOU to Mrs. Lyons and Mrs. Norton who invited us over to their classroom to play on Friday. It was SO nice to have a change of scenery and new toys to play with! We are looking forward to inviting their class over to Room 202 on the next indoor recess day!

Thanks so much for stopping by to see all that is new in Room 202! Go PATS!!
