A Peek At Our Week!

I hope everyone had a wonderful week as we said goodbye to summer and officially welcomed fall! Please enjoy a few highlights from our very busy classroom!

Welcome Mrs. Dacko!!!
Room 202 is excited to welcome Mrs. Raquel Dacko who is one of Boyden School's new kindergarten assistants! We are extremely fortunate to have Mrs. Dacko working in our classroom every morning. Welcome Mrs. Dacko!!!

Literacy
This week in Literacy we read the story Fit-It Duck by Jez Alborough and discussed the guiding question "How do people help each other?". We also reviewed the letters F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, and N, and continued to practice reading the words "I" and "am".

The students above practice their letters and sight words using pegs, stamps, and foam letter boards!

Math
In math the students learned about 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes as we continued our unit on geometry! As a result of this week's lessons, we can now identify 2 dimensional shapes such as circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, and hexagons. We also learned about 3D shapes (or solids) like cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres!

These children worked together to sort plane shapes by various attributes such as shape, color, and size!

Media
Another highlight of our week was visiting the Media Center! During our visit Mrs. Fucile (Boyden School's librarian) read us a wonderful story about how to take care of the books in the library and at home! She also showed us how to use shelf markers to hold our spot when looking at a book. Next week the children will be invited to check out a book from Boyden's Media Center for the first time! Please note that we will be attending Media every Wednesday. Please help your child remember to bring back their book on, or before this day so that they are able to take out a new one!

The children we an excellent audience as they listened to Mrs. Fucile's story!

There was a lot of fun and excitement to be had in Room 202 as we shared our first FULL week of school together! Please enjoy a few highlights below!

Literacy
This week in Literacy we read the story The Little School Bus by Carol Roth and discussed the essential question "How do we get to school?" We also practiced reading the words "I" and "am" and reviewed the letters A, B, C, D, E, and F! Identifying and producing rhyming words was another skill we focused on this week in class!

The students above practiced making this week's sight words with Playdough during center time!

To practice our rhyming skills, each child was given a picture and asked to find the friend who had their rhyming match!

Mat Man!
Another highlight of our week was meeting Mat Man who helps us remember the various body parts that should be included in our drawings (we will also see him again when practicing our handwriting skills!). The children had a fantastic time listening to a Mat Man story and signing a Mat Man song! They also got a chance to put Mat Man together independently, and make their own version of Mat Man at one of our learning centers this week!

The children above practiced putting Mat Man together on the carpet!

These two students picked new shapes for Mat Man's body!

Mrs. B's Bucket Fillers!
This week we also read the story Have You Filled a Bucket Today? By Carol McCloud. This wonderful book encourages positive behavior by using the concept of an invisible bucket to show children how easy and rewarding it is to display kindness through their words and actions. By helping and treating one another nicely, the students in Room 202 quickly began filling each others buckets!

It was a great first week in Room 202! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Our first few days of kindergarten sure were exciting as we got to know our classroom, our school, and each other! I hope you enjoy a little peek at our very fun week!

This week we read the stories Miss Nelson is Missing and Henry B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen as we discussed the rules and expectations for our classroom. We also learned the Pledge of Allegiance and talked about the colors and patterns on the American flag!

Free choice time encouraged the children to become acquainted with their new classmates! The housekeeping area and the road rug where two very popular free choices this week!

The highlight of our week was definitely the Gingerbread Man hunt we participated in on Friday! After reading the classic story, we went on quite the search to find a Gingerbread Man who was loose in Boyden School! Our hunt took us all over the building, and while we never did find him, he left us a fun gingerbread craft to complete when we returned to our classroom!

Thanks so much for reading about all of the fun and excitement in Room 202 last week! As we begin our second week of kindergarten, please remember:

  • We will have two snacks everyday at school (one in the morning and one in the afternoon). Please differentiate between your child's snacks and lunch by labeling them ("snack 1" and "snack 2" works well) or putting them in a separate bag or part of their backpack.

  • Please remind your child how they will be going home in the afternoon, particularly if their routine varies throughout the week.

  • Please remind your child in the morning if they will be bringing their lunch from home or buying lunch at school. If buying, it is helpful if your child knows what they would like to order. Feel free to send me a quick email, or leave a note in their Boyden folder with their lunch choice in order to ensure the correct lunch is purchased.

  • Students are encouraged to bring a beach towel or small blanket to school for quiet time. Soft "lovies" are also allowed. Towels/blankets will be sent home at the end of the month for washing.

  • Keeping an extra set of clothes (shirt, pants, underwear, socks) in your child's backpack is always helpful as things can get dirty and accidents happen!

  • Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have! Email is easiest way to get in touch with me and I will always do my best to get back to you in a timely fashion! In the event of an urgent message, please call Boyden School's main office.
