Last week sure was a busy one in Room 202! I hope you enjoy reading about all of the fun and excitement we had!

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the story Whose Garden Is It? by Mary Ann Hoberman. While reading this fantasy tale we answered the question, "Who lives in a garden?". We also continued to review the sight words "for" and "he" and learned all about the letter N!

We had a great time making necklaces on Friday as our learning about the letter N came to a close!

Math
Last week in math we continued our exploration of teen numbers! We learned that the number 15 is made up of one group of ten and then five more, and the number 16 is made up of one group of ten and then six more! This week we will take a closer look at the numbers 17 and 18!

The students above had a great time making teen numbers on geoboards during math centers!

Brian Lies Visits!
Last week author Brian Lies came to visit Boyden School! Mr. Lies is the author AND illustrator of the "bat books" including Bats in the Band and Bats at the Library (just to name a few!).

During his exciting visit we learned how Mr. Lies gets the ideas for his stories, and all of the work that goes into publishing a book! He also showed us how he draws his famous bat characters!

Fire Safety!
On Friday, we were excited to welcome Firefighter Pete and Firefighter Donovan to Boyden! They taught us some VERY important information about fire safety, including what to do if your clothing is on fire, as well as the number you should call in case of an emergency. The kindergarten classes really enjoyed their visit!

A few lucky student volunteers got to demonstrate how to stop, drop, and roll.

Mrs. G was brave enough to try on firefighter Donovan's gear!

After Firefighter Pete and Firefighter Donovan's visit we took a little extra time to review the number to call in case of an emergency!

Holiday Crafts
Friday was also an exciting day as we enjoyed the first round of holiday crafts! The children had a fantastic time playing Reindeer Ring Toss, and making adorable candy cane and snowman projects! Thank you SO much to all of the parents who were able to join us. We are looking forward to another round of holiday fun this coming Friday!

It was another wonderful week in Room 202!

Curriculum

Literacy
Last week in Literacy the children were introduced to syllables! We learned that a syllable is the number of "parts" or "beats" in a word! The children also had a great time counting the number of syllables in the names of the students in our class. We discovered that most children have two syllables in their names!

We also continued to talk about hibernation last week as we read the nonfiction text A Bed for the Winter by Karen Wallace. The children enjoyed the real photographs in this book and continued to build background knowledge about animals that hibernate. We also were introduced to the sight words he and for, and focused on the letter "i".

We had a great time designing our own igloos for "i" week!

Math
In math we began a unit on teen numbers! We learned that a teen number must start with the number one and also must have one group of ten and then "some more". We discovered that the number 12 is one group of ten and two more, and that 13 is one group of ten and three more! This week we will take a closer look at the numbers 14, 15, 16, and 17!

We had a great time learning about the number thirteen as we completed our Number of the Day chart!

Sugar Cubes Needed!
I am currently looking for boxes of sugar cubes for a fun project we will be completing in class at the end of this coming week. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you SO much in advance!

Curriculum

Holiday Fun
This week we were excited to welcome the month of December and the start of the holiday season! December is sure to be a very busy and FUN month in Room 202!

The children had a fantastic time creating their own holiday cards for the annual Dedham Savings Bank holiday card making contest! We can't wait to find out who the lucky winners will be in a few weeks!

Our class also had a blast completing our paper chains project! Not only will the chains help us count down the days until Christmas, but it also encouraged us to practice important math skills such as counting and creating patterns!

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the story Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. This funny fantasy story about a hibernating bear was a great catalyst for learning real facts and information about animals that hibernate!

The children sure were glad that people don't hibernate! We had a fun time talking about our favorite winter activities on Friday.

Last week in Literacy was also learner about the letter "c" and continued to practice the sight words we, my, and like.

Happy Birthday!
Our class had a fantastic time celebrating the 114th birthday of the Teddy Bear last week! Wearing our jammies and snuggling with our furry friends was definitely a highlight of the day!

Backwards Day!
Participating in "Backwards Day" was another exciting part of our week! The class had a great time wearing their clothing backwards and had to work VERY hard to read our morning message which was written backwards!

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the book Animal Babies in the Grasslands by Jennifer Schofield. When reading this selection we discussed the question, "Where do animals live?" and also explored animal babies and their parents! We learned that a baby lion is called a cub, a baby kangaroo is called a joey, and a baby prairie dog is called a pup! We also learned about the sound that "P" makes and were introduced to THREE new sight words "we", "my" and "like". It sure was a busy week!

Math
Last week in math we continued to explore numbers 1 to 10. We were introduced to the counting tool known as a "ten frame" and enjoyed working in our very own Number Books! We will complete our exploration of numbers to 10 this week, and will begin learning about the numbers 10 to 20 after the Thanksgiving break!

Thanks SO much for stopping by to learn about all of the fun and exciting things happening in Room 202! I hope everyone has a wonderful week and a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Halloween!
Our week got off to an exciting start as the children in Room 202 had a SPOOKtacular time celebrating Halloween! Check out their awesome costumes below!

Pumpkin Fun!
Not only did the students have a great time showing off their costumes in Boyden's Halloween parade, but they also had a blast partaking in some pumpkin fun!

As part of our investigation, the children predicted how many cubes tall our classroom pumpkin would be! We discovered that our pumpkin was exactly 12 cubes tall!

We also learned that pumpkins will float when placed in water!

These kinder kiddos had a great time collecting and counting our pumpkin's seeds! We discovered that our pumpkin had 630 seeds altogether! That's A LOT of seeds! We also learned about the different parts of the pumpkin including the stem, skin, pulp, and fibrous strands! As a grand finale we carved our pumpkin. The students voted to give our pumpkin a ScArY face!

Curriculum

Literacy
Last week in Literacy we read the book Life in the Ocean by Carol K. Lindeen. This book helped us discuss the question, "What is in an ocean environment?". We also learned about the letter S and were introduced to two new sight words "have" and "is".

The students tested their ocean animal knowledge by sorting animals that can be found in the sea and animals that can be found on a farm!

Math
In math we continued to practice comparing and ordering numbers 0-5. We learned the new math vocabulary words more, fewer, same as, column, and row and also used a tool called a ten frame!

The students filled the two rows of their ten frame with counters and then practiced answering the questions "Which row has more?" and"Which row has fewer?". We also began to explore how many more and fewer were in each row.
